Pillows and CPAP

Post by bavinck » Thu Dec 19, 2013 11:18 am

Ok, so I posted a couple days ago about mattress issues, and got some interesting comments regarding pillows. I actually think my problems with waking up sore in my upper back and shoulders is more a function of my crappy flat pillow. Should I spend some money on a high quality normal pillow, or look at getting one formed specifically for CPAP users? Any experiences you have would help, as these pillows are pricey and I want to make sure I have considered every possible solution before pulling the trigger on a $150 pillow.

Here's one to consider: http://www.contourliving.com/cpapmax-pillow/. I have tried many different ones. This has been the best one for me.

I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J0 ... UTF8&psc=1. It was like sleeping on a brick.

I am using http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AC ... UTF8&psc=1. I sleep either on my side or half side/half stomach.

Pillows are so personal. Hope you find one you like!

Like Jaybeem said, pillows are personal. I have been using the Countour memory foam pillow for several years and love it. But that's just me. I'm thinking you were wondering (and writing) about the bed-issue a few days back. I was going to respond, but I was on a stake out and it got real nasty... real quick... and I didn't respond. I probably experienced the same things about bedding and pillows that you are going thru. If you didn't get this response... here it is. Once some folks start quality cpap therapy, they stop flippin' and rolling all night long.... and they stay in one spot for a VERY long time. This is GREAT sleep. When they wake up, their back, shoulders or necks can be sore for staying in one position for a long period of time. To me, this is a normal occurence and one indication that the therapy is working. I ended up getting the Temper-pedic mattress and probably could not sleep on another conventional mattress for the rest of my life. It wasn't too long that I bought the Contour cpap pillow and as I said I love it. It allows me to roll on my side without bumping my mask. Some folks don't like the Temper-pedic mattress and some have tried a memory foam pillow and hated it.

I was determined to increase the comfort of my sleep experience and I was fortunate to go down the right path. Some folks don't like memory foam, so its a path they don't go down.

Yeah that first one didn't work for me, either. Like a brick, yes. By the way, the smell never completely went away, either. I would have had to have dealt with that if it had worked for me.

By the way, I'm using this one:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/double ... -cpap.html

It's just soft enough, good height for side sleeping. Been using it for a while now (almost a couple of years), and haven't found another one that's better or that I can sleep as well with.

Also tried a buckwheat hull pillow, too hard for me, too.

I was recently gifted a Therapedic Eurogel pillow (http://www.therapedic.com/bedding/pillo ... ed-pillow/) and it is the first pillow that I can sleep on comfortably with my nasal pillows style mask without my mask becoming dislodged or having to sleep on the edge of the pillow. But as has been said, pillows are extremely personal. I went to BBB and layed down on the floor with each of the display pillows until I found this one. I suggest that method, though you might get some odd looks from other shoppers.
