ResMed S9 AutoSet and How to Interpret the Numbers

Post by newcpap » Fri Dec 13, 2013 1:14 am

Hello,

I am new user of S9 Autoset (2 weeks now) and this is my first cpap experience as I have recently been diagnosed with mild-moderate sleep apnea. I am planning to see my pulmonologist next week for follow up but I have been trying to understand the numbers I see in the ResScan.

For example, If I look at the last night numbers:

AHI= 0.8
Leak:
Median: 0
95th Percentile: 0
Max: 2.4

Pressure:
Median 7.8
95th Percentile 9.5
Max 10

My readings for 2 nights before were
AHI= 1.7
Leak:
Median 0
95th Percentile 0
max 157.2

Pressure:
Median 7.1
95th Percentile 9.5
max 12.5

My questions are:

1. When I look at the detailed leak graphs for both nights, I see the leak changing and reaching a maximum of 22 or 23 L/Min. While the summary screen shows the max as 2.4 in one night and 157.2 in another. Is this an issue with the way the ResScan calculates the maximum or perhaps I missing something here?

2. I don't have access to sleep technical where I live (I live in middle east) and I have ordered my machine online from US store. The machine came with the following min and max pressure settings:

Min: 4
Max: 20

Since I started the machine I, I noticed that my median pressure has been somewhere around 6-7, so I increased the min to be 7. What is the best advice on how to tune my AutoSet. Please note that I am new user who has been seeing ups and downs as far as symptoms are concerned (see my other thread "Newly Diagnosed"). So, I don't think I can rely on how I feel at the moment, but I am seeking some advice from experienced cpap users or sleep technicians on this forum.

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the group. This is a great place to get help.

Looks like you are off to a good start. Most people do struggle with the machine set wide open at 4-20, so you figured out quickly that increasing the minimum will be more comfortable and help the machine to get up to where it needs to faster. Can you take some screen shots of the daily ResScan graphs? Basically, we would want to see the pressure, leak, and events. Your ahi looks good. I suspect the 157 in leak was a spike where you adjusted your leak or had a short case of the mask leaking. The data tends to make more sense when you can see the whole night. A short spike is no big deal, lots of time above the red line, not so good. With Resmed, that line is at 24, so if your 95% percentile is zero, then you must just have a spike or two, and nothing bad. It's hard to visualize without the graphs. The 95% number means that it was at *or below* that number for 95% of the night, so it basically eliminates short spikes from the overall night's data.

How are you feeling? Are you sleeping okay with it? If you have any problems, ask questions. Chances are, multiple people here have had the same issues and have found ways to get past them.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

So, 2-3 days after I started using CPAP, I started to feel really good. However, this feeling lasted for 3 days only. Then I started feeling bad again. Right now, I feel a bit better compared to what I felt before starting therapy, but not as good as the first phase of feeling good.

Here is snapshot of my graphs for the two nights I mentioned earlier in my post. One question I have though, if I had one spike of leak that caused the max to be 157, shouldn't that spike be in the graph, or does ResMed ignore that spike all together considering it 1 off?

Your graphs look pretty good.

I can tell you from my own experience that I felt really awesome right away and then not so awesome (but not bad) after that. I think that good sleep was such a shock to my system, that it was like an instant awesome feeling, but then my body started using the good sleep to work on healing problems rather than feeling awesome. I did notice over time that I was more cheerful, less tired (not super energetic, but less tired), and overall much better. Even a bad night now is better than a normal night before cpap for me.
