Sinus pain

Post by darco » Tue Nov 26, 2013 7:18 am

Uggh..woke up 3hrs after bedtime with pain coming from high in my right nostril. A throbbing pain that comes and goes every 10-15 seconds. I immediately removed my mask but the pain persisted. I then realized I was in for along nite if I couldnt hose up. Found some Sudafed which was the only sinus med I had. Was able to fall asleep hosed up but not a good nite plus Im going to have a long day too...sigh
I do have my humidifier running but typically the water isnt used up much. I did bump it up a notch. No blood in nose but in past Ive seen that. Also last week I went to bed w/o checking tank and woke with that strange sterile smell and realized that the tank was dry...hope that didnt cause anything.
I live in the SF Bay Area so not really sure if I need this humidifier in the first place. Also wondering if the heated humidifier would help even tho its really not cold out here.
I hope to god I dont have a sinus infection that will cause any issues hooking up to my cpap....should I see my ENT?
Any suggestions?

TIA

D

You have a model 560 machine but from the sounds of it you don't have the heated hose option yet...is that correct?

What settings have you been using on your machine in regards to the humidifier and what pressure setting do you use?

Oh...running the tank dry on a rare occasion doesn't seem to do any damage except to stink to high heaven...done that a few times myself...last time was just a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately it wasn't an all nighter as I did have some water in the tank to start with. Last couple of hours were a bit stinky and I knew I should have just got up when it first started smelling bad...but couldn't quite wake up enough to do it. My reports for those last 2 hours were a bit ugly...lots of tossing and turning and evidence of wake ups.

Living where you live probably means the ambient humidity is already fairly high and likely explains the lack of water usage especially if you have the humidifier set at 3 or below. The default humidification system on the PR S1 machines don't use much water. Just because you might live in a relatively high humidity area doesn't mean you don't need it...everybody's nose is different.
Have you noticed in improvement in the past when you increased the humidity setting?

Having a heated hose...might not be needed for temperature of the air so much but it does allow for more customization and better control of the humidity being delivered.

For today's problem...go get some Simply Saline or similar product and use it frequently today/tonight/tomorrow to see if the sinus issues abate...
if they don't improve in 3 days...see the doctor.

I have a sinus that has given me a problem for several years, complete with throbbing just below my eye and a signature 24 hour headache. The doctor prescribed saline nasal rinses and nasonex. That seems to keep it in check for the most part. You may want to ask about it.

Yes I do have the heated hose. That makes me ask another question. The Zest mask fits right on the end of hose, but with the Swift FX I need to attach it hose to hose and it doesnt fit?
Maybe the DME didnt give me an adapter?
Humidifier settings are around 3...sometimes on wake up I hit the dial instead of off button and Ill have a new setting the next nite!
Ill have to test the settings to see what really works...
Ok on the Saline Solution...still have some left from my septoplasty operation last year...

Swift FX nasal pillows?? It doesn't need an adapter.
Look closely at the mask end of the hose..there should be nothing in it at all...perhaps a piece of the other mask is still stuck in it.
I have used the Swift FX nasal pillow mask with my Heated hose (as well as regular hose) and no attachment is needed. It will fit.
