Can SleepyHead Tell When I'm Awake?

Post by pikov22 » Mon Nov 11, 2013 1:54 pm

I wake up several times each night. I'm awake enough to look at the clock and sometimes even remember what time it was.

Is there anything that SH reports that can tell me what respiratory happening (if any) was responsible for my waking up?

Thanks.

Same here. I wake up a few times also....look at the clock (hoping I remember the times when looking at the report) and go right back to sleep.

No it can't. It can only be determined by brain waves.

However, ones breathing patterns change when asleep which means a human looking at you can usually tell.

It also means you can get a lot of clear airway events while you are awake because we normally hold our breathe when we start moving, or we see something exciting on TV.

Thanks. No increase in CA events can be seen.

Same thing happens to me and has for years. I usually wake up 2-3 times a night, sometimes because I have to go to the bathroom and other times for no reason at all. I always look at the clock and know what time it is when I do wake up and I have always noticed that I wake up a lot of times at the exact same time. for example, if I go to sleep around 10am I usually wake up sometime between 11:30-12 and then around 3:30. and then sometimes I wake up around 5. I was hoping the CPAP would stop that from happening, but I am approaching my third week on it and it hasn't had any effect at all on my waking up at night. I still hold out hope that over time it will

Before CPAP I would sleep straight thru 11:30 pm - 6:30 am. Now I'm starting week 7 on CPAP and still waking up 3 -4 times during the night which is frustrating but hopefully soon my face will get used the "alien", as Pugsy calls it, and I'll start sleeping thru the night like I used to.

SleepyHead really can't tell you when you were awake.

If you don't want to look at a clock or if you've got a PR machine with an awkward clock drift problem, one solution is to simply turn the machine off and then back on when you wake up. The off/on cycles are clearly visible in the data when you look at it in the morning.

Of course, if you've got a very, very long ramp period, turning the machine off and on will restart the ramp and leave you vulnerable to additional events during the ramp up period.

You can also do something like hold your breath for a few seconds and do it 3 times in a row to create a "mark" you can find on your airflow waveform. Or unhook the hose from the mask and put your thumb over it and open and close it a few times to create some pulses on the airflow graph you can find later.

I find that when I turn the machine on and off, there is some loss of data on the end or beginning of the off period.

Why wouldn't simply knowing what time I woke up and navigating to that point work?

I'm awake enough to look at the clock but I'm not awake enough to do any more.

Yes, that would work, but there might be some small difference between the machine clock and the real world clock. Do something like I said to make some big pulses that you can see on the waveform display at some known time. Then check to see how machine time matches real time. Since you can't set the clock on a PRS1 machine, it's probably off at least a little.

I also do this trick because I usually forget the time before I check the data.

Sure---if looking at the clock doesn't cause additional insomnia problems (it does for me) and if the clock and the CPAP clock are relatively close (my PR is 21 minutes too fast and cannot be reset)

I think ResMed S9 do not save the first few minutes when you start the machine, I think I read it somewhere.
