Sleeping outdoors CPAP?

Post by Dive Apnea » Sat Nov 09, 2013 11:19 pm

no not camping ie, tent..... or better RV! A few months ago I was on a buddy's center console (see pic below for example, not boat used), and I started to consider another aspect of my handicap. My buddy, and some other friends often sleep over night on small boats along the coast, on deck on Islands coves, maximizing time for diving, or fishing, either way, there is a lot of dew, saltwater, etc. All boats are like below with cigarette lighter plugs to capable deep cycle marine batteries, (for adapters). Just wondering if anyone here camps outdoors without tents, or has had this situation and a solution. I suppose I can either give up this aspect of my life, or just snore, and apnea away on occasions, by that, I mean, a few times a year.... BTW, my friends are aware of my "affliction."

PS, this might apply to primitive camping on land.

Have you considered getting a dental appliance? Nothing to plug in.

Not on land in our case. My wife claims my snoring makes for a safer campsite cause my snoring spooks any Bears or Wolves into thinking that our campsite has already been claimed by something that growls louder.

There are a lot of lots of posts by people who sleep on boats/RVs with their equipment. They use the vehicle's batteries.

Unfortunately for me canoes don't have batteries, but then my joints don't like sleeping on the ground much anymore so I guess it doesn't matter.

Bad environment for electronics not made for it. Two suggestions

1 Buy an old throwaway cpap like a Respironics Legacy machine and use it till it dies and then buy another.

2 Depending on the severity of your apnea, sleeping upright or close to it really helps.

Hit the yard sales, or Craigs, get an old cheapie that will run off the DC.
A longer cord if necessary--heavier gauge to reduce conductor load.

Yeah, there is no way I'd risk damaging my cpap, for now just have to sleep w/o in such situations outdoors, no tent. Last trip we had a travel trailer with electrical hookups, and before that I had a deep cycle marine battery. Thanks for replies!

Like other people have said, buy a second xpap machine for your purpose, one that you won't worry about damaging when using it outside on a boat.

And use a small portable battery pack. I use this one: http://www.cpapmachinescanada.com/cpap- ... cp-266.php with the power inverter http://www.cpapmachinescanada.com/cpap- ... verter.php with my ResMed S9 Autoset when camping in a tent. Works great. I can get three nights out of a single charge if I don't use the humidifier.

This product is cheaper than the one that's made by ResMed: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... hines.html

I wouldn't recommend going without your machine, if at all possible.

You can get a cheap 2 person tent in most department stores which will protect you and your machine.

I was actually talking about sleeping outdoors without any cover, ie no tent etc. I have a bunch of camping gear, access to borrow a travel trailer. It'd be rare for me to sleep without a tent, but a possibility. I think a 2nd machine might be the ticket, not sure how it would last with dew, saltwater air, etc.

How about a cover for the machine itself?
