cough

Post by djk » Tue Nov 05, 2013 11:11 am

Long time cpap user, just picked up a new resmed elite with the humidity/water set up. Have picked up a persistent cough since using the humidifier, not feeling ill at all just coughing. I'm going to stop using humidifier to see if that stops the coughing but I'm just wondering if anybody has had or heard that happen to them.

If I set my humidifier up too high (ie. eighty five on my S9), I get kind of a gurgling cough in the morning. I just turn it down a bit till the cough goes away.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I just posted the same thing a few days ago. Mine is set at 4 and I would have a dry cough all day. Look at my post for a few suggestions that were given to me. I increased the humidity level to 5 last night and had water and condensation in my mask and hose but my cough is a lot better today.

If you have been using cpap without any humidification for a long time without any difficulty,
I would suggest you start out using non-heated (pass over) mode.
Later, you might try adding heat, starting with the lowest setting. Change alone can be a problem.
Some people do better with no added humidity, and it may be seasonal.

If you're using a nasal mask, mouth leaks may dry your throat.

I started cpap in April of 2012. In June, I started coughing. At first, I considered the cpap usage. I asked about it here. I deep cleaned everything. No help. The cough finally went away and then came back in July. Lasted 8 weeks. The doctor thought it was medication and changed it during that time. No improvement. The cough was back off and on for several months. I finally discovered the cause in early November. I was having asthma cough (without the normal asthma attacks) due to exposure to a leaked chemical. My dad gave me the final clue when he commented that I was getting sick after every trip I made, but I replied that it wasn't true and listed all the trips where I did not get sick. I then realized that all of those trips were vehicles in somebody else's vehicle. All the cough episodes came after trips in the minivan which is what I use for cat show trips. And the longer distance trips had the worst cough episodes. And what happened in May, a couple weeks before the first episode? My mom's friend spilled a whole bottle of liquid fertilizer in the van, right behind the front seats. It soaked down into the carpet and went under the front seats. My dad removed the seats and deep cleaned. And for awhile I took allergy medication before and during every trip. No more cough.

Sometimes, it is something completely different and the timing can make it seem related.
