They could do the same thing with meat - like make real meals, which would be better for the kids because they need B12 which you can only get from meat or fish.

You can get B12 in other ways, and a recent large study said eating beef (or pork, any red meat) literally takes 10 yrs off your life.

Only through meat or fish or supplements. Since it controls brain growth and function it is very important. Ten years is worth it thank you.

I think one of the big questions one needs to ask about any meat that they eat is “what did the creature eat during it's lifetime?”.

Most meats available today (even much of our fish) are fed on genetically altered corn and soy constantly drenched with glyphosates, insecticides and fungicides. The ground it grows in has likely been altered by these chemicals for generations now so the infrastructure of life fungal, bacteriological, insect, and animal is greatly altered. While the nutritional content - that they look at - may be somewhat the same the food is very different than it used to be.

The nutritional value of much of the food we eat today has been destroyed by GMO, antibiotic feeding, corn, or whatever. We tend to eat what our body thinks we need, but to get the same nutritional value we need to eat more, or take supplements. The supplement route is clearly preferable if you are scared about gaining weight - almost everyone is in that category. I wish I wasn't, but leading a sedentary lifestyle has put me firmly there!

I agree.

I think sugar is a big player in the appetite problems (see: http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Chance-Beatin ... 59463100X/ ).

Several years ago they gave me a pedometer during a visit to a lipid clinic. It was a cheep model and I replaced it with an Omron. Then with an Ipod 6th Gen. Nano. Now with a USB connected Omron. Bit by bit I went from 20% of 10,000 steps a day to over 85% of 10,000 steps a day last summer.

Last night and the night before I was at the gym for over two and one half hours. Most of the time was spent on the cycle (arthritis prevention), some on the treadmill, last night was a “resistance training” night so I did the machines along with the rest. I think you simply start – start slow – go slow – but be consistent and grow consistently.

So about five years since I received the pedometer I am down from a BMI of 35 to a BMI of just under 30 and I am still loosing about 10 or so pounds a year. While exercise does not predict weight loss it is the most notable factor in those who do not gain it back. Go for it!!!

I grew up eating wild game, and got my share of weeds. (lambs quarter, wild asparagus)
The grandkids start out eating plastic, or close to it.

If the kids were served hot dogs and hamburgers every day I still don't think they would be eating very much meat.

So if I wanted to make a super bug how would I do it? I need a lot of bugs growing in a lot of critters into which I put a level of antibiotics which is "enough to let them pass inspection" at the time of slaughter.

If I not only injected them but put it in their feed - well that would be even better!!!

If I let them spend their entire life in close proximity to one another literally walking through their own feaces - well - that just has to make some good bugs.

And that is exactly what we are doing!!!

I think you have a good point.

My daughter went mostly vegetarian for awhile mostly out of consideration of how the animals we raise for slaughter are usually treated. Then she became a PT and needed large amounts of protein. She is careful about where the meat comes from (how was the critter treated) but tells me that her general health improved notably when she incorporated more protein.

Right now I am working to develop upper body strength. I am eating a lot more meat and fish than usual. I would say I am getting healthier. I would also say it is expensive!

The thing that most excited me about the article was the fact that they were actually cooking for the children rather than feeding them frozen junk and that they were teaching them nutrition early on. If I had learned about nutrition and how to cook early in my life I might well have never gotten sick!!!

I am glad as well for so many reasons.

We will have another healthy person to be productive and happy in our midst.

It is proof you did a good job raising your daughter.

It is likely the three of you can enjoy each other longer and with higher quality.

My daughter does a better job with food than I do (healthy eating and all).

I hope I get some time to teach my son a bit more of what I have learned in the last decade or so about how to be healthy in the kitchen. That IS where the action IS.
