New CPAP machine? Which one?

Post by zzzzcouple » Sun Oct 27, 2013 5:52 pm

My husband's CPAP unit is nearing the end and we need to purchase, out of our own pocket, another machine for him. Right now he has an old Remstar 1005960 CPAP that has been wonderful.

What is new or gently used, QUIET, comfortable that you would recommend?

Thanks,

For a gently used, properly refurbished and cleaned machine, you might try secondwindcpap.com. As for the make and model, I'd try to get a pretty current model that records efficacy data. Any of these would be fine:

Philips Respironics System One Series 50 model 450 (the Pro)
Philips Respironics System One Series 50 model 450AutoIQ (the Pro with Auto IQ)
Philips Respironics System One Series 50 model 550 (the Auto)

Philips Respironics System One Series 60 model 460 (the Pro) [has a heated hose option]
Philips Respironics System One Series 60 model 660 (the Auto) [has a heated hose option]

Resmed S9 Elite
Resmed S9 AutoSet (NOT the Auto Escape)

I think more info is necessary to give valid advice.
When was his last SleepStudy?
When did he last see his sleep doctor?
What is his current diagnosis?

If CPAP is all he needs I would recommend the Resmed S9 Autoset. If he needs Bipap or ASV now, that would require a totally different machine.
If you are in the US you will need a prescription for any supplier to sell to you.

These devices require a moderate investment. It makes sense to know what you need before you buy. I know. I almost got the wrong machine 2 weeks ago. A slow supplier was all that saved me.

Remstar 1005960
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... -cpap.html
That's the old Resmstar Plus...Legacy model ...what we refer to as the "tanks".
Plain basic cpap machine with no special functions other than blowing the air. Fixed single pressure with no exhale relief.

Since it works well and your husband has been using it for years then he is very likely more used to the Respironics algorithm or way of doing things and I would suggest staying with Respironics.
If money is tight...for sure stay with Respironics because they are more affordable than the ResMed machines. It's not from lack of quality though...it's from ResMed holding a hard line about discounting their machines from their MSRP. That keeps the price inflated.

ResMed users will tell you to get a S9 ResMed.
Respironics users will tell you to get a Respironics PR System One.
Most cpap users haven't had a chance to use both brands and actually compare them to see if one is really better than the other.
There are a few forum members here who have had a chance to use both brands...I am one of them and I think the others pretty much agree with me in that it's a toss up as to which is "best". Now there may be a few people who might do better with one algorithm over the other brand but I think most people would be happy with either brand starting out.

Are you wanting anything else in a machine? Your current machine is a bare bones basic machine....Respironics still makes that same model in the PR System One line...but there are now machines that offer exhale relief and data (software easy to get and use) so that therapy can actually be evaluated at the patient level. Not something you have ever had...you may not feel the need or want it but I always suggest that people get a full data machine if at all possible even if they don't see the need now. They might have a need a year from now...so better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Yes..the new PR System One machines are very quiet...the machines have improved a lot since yours was the latest and greatest.

Pugsy this may be are first minor disagreement.

My first couple nights with my PRS 1 960 the noise kept me awake most of the night. My old Resmed S9 was silent. I never heard the machine, I occasionally heard mask leaks but never the S9.
I am learning to sleep with the noise, it helps if my wife still has the TV on til I fall asleep. The TV drowns out the PRS 1.

There's a world of difference between your 960 and the pressure ranges it has to go through to deal with your issues and the plain jane single fixed pressure machines.
The more work the machines seem to do the greater it seems the noise level is.

I used a PR S1 550 Auto CPAP as my first PR S1 machine ...after coming from the Respironics M series APAP...
That 550 was essentially silent compared to my now used machine PR S1 bilevel machine. The changes in the pressures will impact the noise level.

I do wonder though....what you are saying you are hearing from your 960 machine...have you taken it back to the DME to have them check it out. These machines shouldn't be THAT loud.
Yeah...there's always some noise level but if it is so loud that you can't sleep with it...maybe there's a problem.
We have several 950/960 users here and you are the first one to make such a strong statement about the noise level.
I can't hear your machine...my ears don't work so great through the computer
It wouldn't be impossible for there to be some sort of problem.

I thought you and I were just talking about initial inhale and exhale noise but it shouldn't be so loud that you can't sleep and it certainly shouldn't be so loud that the wife can't sleep.....does she hear this noise also?

I would take it back and have it checked out. Tell them it is keeping you awake and run it through its paces to see if they hear what you are hearing.

My wife actually likes the "noise" of my PRS1. She can tell that I am using the thing! Whether you like one machine over another is probably purely subjective, so I am not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't get. Good luck with deciding!

I have only had the machine since Tuesday evening. When I complained on Wednesday they brushed me off. I was planing to go to war Monday but you have convinced me to back off.

I thought you and I were just talking about initial inhale and exhale noise but it shouldn't be so loud that you can't sleep and it certainly shouldn't be so loud that the wife can't sleep.....does she hear this noise also?

Yes she hears it, but it is not right next to her head, and does not keep her awake. Once I am asleep it does not wake me up. Is that initial inhale exhale noise normal? Over at Apnea Board I described as Casper the ghost trapped inside and whaling all night, or at least when I am awake.

I would take it back and have it checked out. Tell them it is keeping you awake and run it through its paces to see if they hear what you are hearing.
That sounds like a great idea. I will talk to them in the morning.

I've done well with craigslist, but a lot of people want way too much money. They think because the DME billed them for $2500, they should be able to get $1200. Check the CPAP.com prices and figure out how much less you'd be willing to pay for a used machine with no warranty or service.

I've found I often have to look for 3 months or so to find a good buy, but they do show up from time to time. If you're not in a hurry, that helps.

You might also find a friend has a machine they're not using.

Be sure to figure out which machines are good, and which ones are dataless bricks.

Robysue's list is good. Avoid the S9 Escape and Escape Auto, and the REMstar SE, DS150, DS160, and REMstar Plus.

Don't bother with any brand but Philips Respironics System One or ResMed S9.
