sleep study at home

Post by helene » Fri Oct 25, 2013 12:58 pm

I have been using my cpap for 3 years after taking a home sleep study, now my provider says I need a full sleep study to requalify. I have medicare and supplemental insurance that covers everything. The problem is that they insist that this be done in a sleep center so they can "work out titrations?" , but I can't do that. I have severe allergies and Sjogren's disease that flares when I am exposed to the slightest allergen. Sleeping around people that may have dog or cat dander on their clothes could set off a cascade of flares that could disable me for months. I'm not sure how to proceed. Any thoughts?

Speak to the centre and explain your concerns. You may not be near other people in any case - each place is different and very many have separate rooms. I'm sure the sheets, etc. will be clean, but you can ask about that as well. Don't forget that most clinical settings are close to sterile, and I can't imagine that you only live your life in a bubble otherwise. What about anyone on the street or in stores with dander, etc. on their clothes?

Medicare certifies certain home sleep studies, so as long as it qualifies for Medicare, then your secondary payer should accept it, UNLESS you are on a Part C Medicare Advantage plan which means you have a limited choice in providers. You might try calling Medicare to see if they can help with this, or consider switching supplemental insurance to an insurer who will accept a home study and titration while it's open enrollment time.

You can also try appealing through the regular grievance channels for your insurer, but that will take time and without guaranteed success.

Julie, I can sympathize with the OP.

Sheets may be clean, but if a strong detergent was used, it can still be a problem. If they clean their floors with a pine scented floor cleaner, that will set me off. If equipment is wiped down with a scented wipe, that could be an issue. I have a skin allergy to adhesives. I have to let my masks air out for a good while before they stop off-gassing the plastic smell so I can wear them--can't use brand new, out of the package equipment which would be the norm in a titration. If the tech is wearing scent, even subtle scent like a scented lotion on her hands, or a particularly aromatic shampoo, it can cause issues for me. Or worse (and this happens!) the tech takes a smoking break out back, and comes back in reeking of smoke. The place can be "almost sterile" and still a problem.

I have a very hard time going to stores now that people bring dogs as service animals. I'm almost at the point of having to pay someone to shop for me. All my friends change their clothes before they come over. It's a bigger problem than you think when paired with Sjogren's. I do worry about detergents etc. too. I have to very careful. This is a problem that grew more serious over the years. I even worry that if I need to go in hospital, I will be exposed to allergens.

I will call Medicare and my insurance provider. There should be some way around this. Thanks for your suggestion. Right now, the only way I can protect myself is avoiding pets at all costs. Needless to say, it is limiting my life in many ways.

Take your own mask but use theirs if they have the same kind. I think most sleep centers give you the nask rather than trying to clean them.

If you have a bacterial inline filter, take that too.

Take your own sheets and pillow or pillow case and strip and remake the bed.
The room air should be OK so you should be good to go?

Good luck.
