Best DIY sleep study now?
Best DIY sleep study now?
What's the best DIY sleep study these days for diagnosing sleep apnea? A few years ago I bought a cheap overnight oximeter from a Chinese company. They were planning an addon that measured airflow through your nose at the time but wasn't released. What would you all recommend? I'd be interested in one for a 5yo (paranoid parent) and another for a 40yo (stubborn relative). Thanks!

Record the audio. I use one of these (see: http://www.amazon.com/SuperEar-Personal ... B000X2H8G4 ) to be the microphone and then use Audacity to do the recording and to look at the results. It takes a time to calibrate levels and perhaps to get the room quiet but you can almost do phonospirometry when you are done.balor123 wrote:What's the best DIY sleep study these days for diagnosing sleep apnea? Then there is video recording. I have no experience but many have found good results. Nice to see what is going on and there are many “nighttime” cameras with built in IR LED emitters so no light but good results.
If you use a couple of camera angles you might well be able to estimate abdominal effort!
Remember that the pulse oximeter provides some pulse data.
If you are really into “build your own” you might look into http://openeeg.sourceforge.net/doc/ or even something like https://www.olimex.com/Products/Duino/S ... D-EKG-EMG/ . Use extreme care with electronics near/on the body. Shock hazard – do not even go near any AC – battery only – low voltage (<5) and power controlled (prevent burn and/or fire hazard – you can pretty well weld with some of the battery systems these days and they weigh so little!).
Take care, have fun, and by all means keep everyone safe!!
