Aerophagia...and now reflux!

Post by sawinglogz » Wed Sep 25, 2013 8:55 am

My pressure isn't that high (see below), but from day one I've struggled with aerophagia. Even a few cmH2O is enough to make me feel like I'm filling my digestive tract with air.

Most nights it's manageable (though unpleasant), and every once in a while it's very painful.

But now there's an even bigger problem: trying to burp while horizontal (and asleep) is pushing up acid into my throat.

I've been on ASV for 4 months now, 100% compliance, and I don't think I had reflux before therapy.

I don't eat within 3 hours of going to bed, and I've even avoided drinking any water in that time. I've also already elevated the bed by 1.5". I'm also sleeping on my left side. None of that has helped. I've also just ordered a wedge to see if it helps before subjecting my wife to a full 6" elevation (and undertaking the effort to lift the bed, etc.).

What else can I do? Has anybody else had this problem? Help!

The 1.5" elevation will not do anything for the reflux...you need a min of 4". We have had our bed elevated 4.5" for the past 10 years. We don't even notice it. You will be better off with blocks under the head of the bed than using a wedge. The wedge makes you bend at the waist rather than lying flat like you would with bed blocks. I assume that you are taking some OTC meds for the reflux.

I was having acid reflux and esophagus spasms. I was tested and had H pylori. My doctor said it is now seen mostly in third world countries. It can be passed down from parents to children. I grew up in a small town where everyone had septic tanks and wells. My dad had really bad ulcers. I could have gotten it from him or the well water. My doctor also said that you could be tested for this by a simple blood test. I talked to my brother and his doctor said he didn't need testing. We are going to schedule a day for my family to go see my doctor for this test. I guess there is too much money in treating acid reflux.
