Nasal Gel Masks

Post by pikov22 » Thu Sep 05, 2013 6:27 pm

May I hear from people who use nasal gel masks and who prefer them?

Which have you tried and which do you recommend?

Muchas gracias!

pikov from Nioo Joisee, I am using a traditional nasal mask which looks like this:

When I started CPAPing I used Fisher & Paykel Full Face #431 and #432. But, I could not get good air seal with either of the two masks. After switching to my present traditional nasal mask and a chinstrap I improved the air leak problem a lot.
Recently, I have decided to check again the reasons for the large leaks that I had with the 431 and 432, and realized this: I wear 2 removable dentures. Up and down. When I used those masks I went to sleep without those dentures. But when I made grimaces with my face the leaks became huge. Trying other FF masks such as Resmed Quattro, Quattro FX, Respironics FF, etc. I did not like it when my cheeks became ballooned like a Chipmunk. So here I am with my nasal mask. I keep the upper denture (only) during sleep to allow the nasal mask's bottom to make a seal at the moustache area (I have no moustache). Overall, I think that the double flap silicone cushions that Resmed {and Respironics?} use are a technological sealing advancement over the rest of the masks makers. As to using nasal pillows, IMO, they are too flimsy for me.

Thanks. In north Jersey, it's "noo joisee". "New" doesn't become "nioo" until Philadelphia and south, and then "jersey" is pronounce "jersey".

Is the traditional mask a gel mask?

Define "tradition", please.
The "tradition" of suffering with any mask that hurts is one we can stop any minute now.
The "tradition" of forcing people to be treated with bricks is also one we can lose.
It seems that most of the "traditions" associated with cpap can be discarded already.
Of course, the most common mask material is silicone, but gel and even fabric are quite acceptable.
If they were ever made of rubber, it's good that they don't do that any more.

What are the plusses and minuses of each type?

I use the ResMed SoftGel Nasal Mask specifically because it has the Gel portion of the cushion.

I previously used the Respironics ComfortGel, but it's cushion had a separate gel cushion inside of the regular cushion.

I much prefer the ResMed SoftGel because the Gel part of the cushion is made into the overall cushion therefore it is all 1 piece instead of the 2 pieces of the Resprionics ComfortGel. I switched to the ResMed specifically for its 1 piece design.
