Vaseline as a sealant / skin protection for nasal pillows?

Post by Jeannh » Mon Sep 09, 2013 8:36 am

Any reason to avoid Vaseline as a sealant / skin protection for nasal pillows? I use Vaseline for other skin irritations.

Thanks -

Vasoline is a petroleum based product and petroleum based products have been known to degrade the silicone.
So that's why we suggest that products used around the masks be non petroleum based products.
I also wouldn't want petroleum based products in my nostrils. I read something quite awhile back from the mayo clinic about avoiding the possibility of inhaling any of those oil based particles because there's a chance for them to cause pneumonia. I know it's probably a small risk but since there are so many other products to choose from I don't see the need in even taken the small risk.
The silicone maybe breaking down sooner..I suspect it depends on how much is used and how long and cleaning regiment.

A much nicer alternative is lanolin, specifically Lansinoh, purified, odorless lanolin,
sold in the breastfeeding department where baby things are sold.
