Diabetics and Sleep Anea

Post by Woody » Sat Sep 07, 2013 5:22 am

Hearing that a lot of diabetics have sleep apnea is what led me to be tested for sleep apnea.
I usually don't collect and look at my cpap data but the last 3 days I have. Well last night I
went out with some friends and had a large late night diner. As expected my blood sugar was
rather high this morning which is why I usually don't eat late at night. But not only was my blood
sugar a little higher my auto cpap reported that last night my average pressure was about 2 inches
higher. I know you really can't tell diddly looking at only 3 days data which is why I am asking
if this was probably just a fluke or is it common for a late night meal to do this.

It's not uncommon. Very many of us have GERD (acid reflux) for an as yet unsure (medically researched) reason, and while it may not awaken you as it does some, it can still cause subarousal events... and if it's chronic, it's called 'silent Gerd'. While that may not be your problem, I would think that a big meal (possibly with (acidic) coffee and/or alcohol, close to bedtime, could affect your sleep and stats.

It is not uncommon for folks that have sleep apnea to have other medical problems. I think sleep apnea compounds these other issues. Treating apnea correctly can reduce the health issue if not entirely remove it. I have reduce my blood pressure and my glucose levels have lowered from a 150 to 104 (fasting levels). I also think once you find a comfortable mask that doesn't leak and get used to using the machine, you should move into a system of good sleep hygiene (comfortable bed, pillow, proper amount of sleep, sleep schedule and good sleep "practices"). Eating a large meal, stress, whiskey, certain drugs etc... will always affect your sleep and AHI results. We all have bad nights (and days).

A large. starchy evening meal will always raise blood sugar in a diabetic.
Avoid pasta or pizza, and any place that fills the clientele up with grain (bread sticks, crackers, etc.)
If you avoid carbohydrates, you can enjoy a substantial protein and vegetable meal with minimal ill effects.
Surprisingly, buffets are good places to find and choose wisely to keep your glucose under control.
Avoid the starchy foods, sauces, potatoes, corn, bread, desserts (except fresh fruit).
Self control is easier if you take a glance around at everybody who doesn't use it,
and imagine waking up after an evening of gluttony.
