Tape for the 1000th time

Post by Christine L » Mon Aug 12, 2013 1:10 pm

I know there are many threads on tape and I have read many of them. But I am still confused about what kind of tape to use (for the mouth).

I started using a 3M medical tape. But it hurts to pull of in the morning and is leaving some red areas. I think in a few more days the problem will be worse and the tape will have to be discontinued.

Anyone found a good, gentle tape that was made for humans not sheet rock?

I have never tried the one discussed in this thread but it seemed very promising from what I read on the 3M Kind Removal Silicone Tape.

Hi Christine, I don't know which of the medical tapes you're using (there are several different 3M medical tape types), I use paper tape for sensitive skin though the silicone tape looks worth a try too. Whatever type you try, you can make removal easier by putting it on your forearm once or twice before you put it over your mouth. In addition, using face moisturizing lotion where the tape will be helps a lot in the a.m.

On very rare occasion when I get a bit of redness in the a.m. (When I forget the above prep), a little 99% pure aloe gel (cheap) takes care of it quickly and also is a nice skin conditioner.

Last, I put a little piece of cotton fabric on the tape where it will be right over my lips so I don't have tape touching my lips.

Don't forget the safety slit.

I don't use tape but recall that other users have use 3M Micropore tape and even
3M Painter's Tape (the version made for delicate surfaces. #2080 if I remember correctly.)

Some who have delicate skin have applied a thin coating of dried Pepto Bismol (don't laugh)
before taping up to decrease the stickiness enough to not tear skin.
Another old trick is to reduce the tack by sticking it to your arm for a few seconds, peeling off, and then applying to face.
I like J&J cloth tape, but then I've got skin like an old saddle.

Not sure what this safety slit is all about.
If you put a slit in the tape, then why tape?
I would just blow air out the slit.

But, I do fold the edges in on both sides...just In case I would need to remove it quickly.

I'm working with Walgreen to get the 3m sensitive tape (1 1/2") because its so expensive online.
This is the best tape for me I've found so far.

PS been taping for 4 years.

It's just a small slit (where the paper clip is in the photo). It doesn't interfere with the tape doing its job. It still won't let my mouth drop open at night, but it will let me purposely open my mouth a little if I needed to. My leaks are zero and it gives me a little extra peace of mind. I generally don't "blow" air out of my mouth, though I've discovered that I can occasionally cough without ruining the tape job.

Oh, I see.
Good idea

But, I don't tape to keep my chin from falling open, I tape to keep my lips sealed so no air escapes.
One little opening and it would get wet and......well I don't want to even think about it

I'm in the same shape as you, Christine. What tape do you think you'll try?

I have been using 3M Nexcare Gentle Paper Tap 2-inch and it is not gentle. But the last couple of nights I took your suggestion for moisturizing lotion and that made the tape pretty easy to "roll" off in the morning. Thanks for the suggestion! So far no irritation. We'll see what happens.

Good idea. I use a variant by leaving one corner of my mouth bare of tape - I can even slip in a Tylenol or a straw if needed.

I use the tape under a FFM so some mouthleak is not a big deal. I just need the tape to keep my jaw from dropping. From what I read in the forum this commonly happens during REM. It seems to be the case for me.

Thank you. Thank you.

Before ordering I called a local wholesaler. Using my sexiest, dumbest, blonde voice I asked the manager to get me a sample roll of the 3M Kind Removal tape. I was surprised it worked. He put me on hold and called his (3M?) rep and then came back and asked for my mailing address.

So, it seems like a free sample is on the way to me. I will test it and let you know my experience.

I saw in a dry eyes forum some are using this tape over their eyes in bed at night. Maybe someone with dry eyes wants to try it?

Yay! Glad it helped. The tape is not gentle for me either if I forget to do my night-before routine.
