Sleep apnea and anti-depressants

Post by deadasleep » Mon Jun 05, 2006 10:40 pm

I have been taking lexapro for 4 months and just found out sleep apnea is the cause my moodiness, short fuse and depression. Does anyone have a similiar situation? And if so, have you stopped taking anti-depressants after using the CPAP?

A timely question for me as well.

My situation: dx'd with depression 2 years ago - did therapy and was put on Wellbutrin for about a year. Went off Wellbutrin by my own decision. Felt ok for a good while, but then got referred to look at gastric bypass surgery last winter, and had to do an MMPI study (general eval) - which the psychologist said indicated I was doing better, but still had concern about the depression going back to the level it was the prior year. Started back on Wellbutrin as more of a "pre-emptive" strategy for the post-op phase of my gastric bypass.

Well - a sleep study was required prep for my surgery as well, and I've spent 16 weeks figuring out that my problem is more likely due to long term severe apnea and the effects of just "being" heavy. I haven't really noticed any true difference in the way I feel during this second go-round with Wellbutrin, but I'm still too early in my xPap treatment to make the decision to abandon it.

Bottom line for me - I'm going to follow doc's orders and stay on my med until I'm healed and in a "good place" after surgery, at the same time giving myself a chance to make up for lost time on xPap.

But I think I'll likely have no need for it about 6 months from now.

Still pre-op, but surgery will likely be in 6-8 weeks from now.

I'd love to hear what others might have to add on this topic.
