New User-Sleep Talker

Post by Apelover42 » Sat Feb 12, 2005 11:39 pm

Hi, I am surprised and excited to find this board. I am 42 years old and have been a sleep talker all of my life. I have tape recorded myself and have complete (halves) of conversations as if I am talking to someone. A couple of years ago, I mentioned to my doctor that I felt tired during the day and he sent me to a specialist for a sleep study. I did the study here at home, hooking myself up to a machine that measured my breathing, pulse, etc. He said I had sleep apnea and they prescribed a CPAP machine. I used the machine for a short time, but gave it up because of a stupid reason. At the time, I had an inconsiderate boyfriend who felt the machine was ridiculous. I know what you're thinking...but that's not my point here and he's not around anymore. I don't recall if I felt any less tired during the short period I used the machine and would like to go back to the doctor to be re-evaluated and get a new one if possible. What I am wondering is if the sleep talking is light periods of sleep causing the sleep study to look as if I have sleep apnea or if the sleep apnea is causing the light sleeping and therefore, the talking. Since I've talked all of my life, how likely is it that I've had sleep apnea all of my life? Or...could the two be totally unrelated? Does anyone have any insight or similar situation? "Apelover"

Hi,

I don't know about the sleep talking, and hopefully someone else who has had that will respond, but I wish you luck. Many of us had a sleep study at a sleep clinic or sleep testing facility where they monitor everything about your sleep patterns including whether you stop breathing and how often. I'm guessing that the key question is whether you're stopping breathing. I'm also guessing that maybe a more thorough test at a clinic would help clarify things for you.

Should I insist on an "in facility" type test? I went to UCSD and they sent me home with all of the equipment. From the machine output, they were able to tell me that I was stopping breathing 20+ times an hour for up to one minute per episode. What does that mean to you experienced folks?
