Hooray for this article. They are calling osa what it really is, a breathing disorder. It is not a sleeping disorder!!!

My doctors were about to kill me for two years by attempting to treat my "sleep disorder" with Lunesta/Ambien/muscle relaxants/antidepressants. I did not have a sleep disorder, I had osa which is a breathing disorder!!!

Thank God and the internet, CPAP is now treating my breathing disorder and my sleep symptoms are nearly gone.

YES....it is a breathing disorder. To insert the word sleep semms to lead people (even some health care providers) to think it only occurs during sleep. It can occur anytime you are relaxed/less than alert/taking pain meds/sedating meds/unconscious from injury.
Faced with the choice between changing one's mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.....Galbraith's Law

I agree completely, as I've found myself holding my breath during the DAY! Has nothing to do with sleep, except 'the lack of'.

I hear you... I had someone a few weeks ago say to me, "Have you tried Tynol PM?" My reply, "It is a breathing probelm, not a sleeping problem.

Let me chime in that I learned very quickly to tell people I have a breathing problem. If you tell them sleep apnea, then they will not understand. I usually just leave it at "a breathing problem" that requires 7 to 8 hours on a "breathing machine" each night. If they ask more questions I will answer them, but I do not bring up the phrase "sleep apnea".

I just tell people I can't breathe and sleep at the same time and they usually think about it for a second and then seem to understand.

Interesting thought about referring to it as a breathing problem but that may pose other circumstances. The person you are talking with will in all likelihood assume medical conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, etc. unless you make it perfectly clear that this is sleep disordered breathing.

If I did that, I'd hear nothing except "Well, that's what you get (read deserve) for smoking!"

Let me first say I have been an ardent anti-smoking fowl since my teen years. I just saw the movie "Thanks For Smoking" and it was hilarious. I didn't know what to expect and surprised myself that within a few minutes of the start of the movie I was cheering for the lobbyist representing big tobacco. I think most most smokers and most anti-smoking types will love the movie.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've been a smoker, and a former-smoker.
