Had hoped to be able to wean off the Prilosec

Post by apneaicinisrael » Thu May 25, 2006 3:02 am

Hi All,

I have been a "user" since February 15, 2006. When I first started, I had a bunch of minor concurrent medical issues and was hopeful that some of them would be solved by the CPAP. After 3 months of CPAP I stopped my Prilosec which had been doing a great job getting rid of my GE reflux. I was hopeful that I wouldn't need it anymore. Well, I do. After a week off it, I know I do. So I was wondering if others who went into CPAP with GERD on medications were able to stop meds, or if you are still on them, or what. Not that it bothers me too much, it is a great little pill, but I had sort of hoped to move one step towards being med free.

Just wondering,

AII

I was also on Prilosec for over 2 yrs. for acid reflux. I have been a "hosehead" since Jan. 06 and stopped taking the Prilosec also in January, but I can't honestly say that the CPAP treatment is what has alleviated that problem. I also have been on a diet (Medifast) since Jan. and have lost 35 lbs. I think that eating less, not eating after 6 p.m., staying away from acidic foods, and eliminating all caffeine has contributed to the relief more than the CPAP has. Interesting question.....

I agree with SleeplessinBradenton. I have been on cpap since August 05 and I still take my Prilosec. Since my weight fluctuates with my sleep quality I am able to stop taking my Prilosec when my weight drops enough. I think most of my problems come from the excess weight hanging over my belt, when that shrinks I don't notice acid problems.

I agree with the two previous responders and also, PPI's like Prilosec should be weaned off of because, I have heard, if you stop cold turkey the stomach can over produce acid. I don't know the actual "weaning" schedule to recommend. I know that if I cut down on quantity of food, finish eating before 7pm, cut way down of fats (my biggest reflux producer) my reflux essentially disappears even at my current weight (which pretty doggone big!).

Good luck, I want to get off of them too but haven't changed my habits enough, consistently enough.

I started using CPAP in 1993. I had a major problem with heartburn at night but after starting CPAP the problem ended and its fine ever since.
