Home sleep study or PSG

Post by birdiebaby » Wed May 24, 2006 10:08 am

My husband went for his first visit to the sleep doctor today. I had a home sleep study in March and was diagnosed. The doctor ordered a sleep study for my husband, and we found out the from insurance coordinator that UHC is generally not approving the home sleep studies.

So, I'm curious... how many of you had the home study and how many had a full PSG?

How about both? Overnight sleep study, unable to tolerate mask, had a week long home study to determine titration. I too have UHC and they refused to pay the home study stating it was not a proven procedure. We appealed, my doc sent a letter with articles from major medical journals and they are still reviewing it, but it looks pretty promising.

I had both. After the home study clearly indicated apnea, the hmo required me to have an overnight study to 'confirm' the diagnosis. No problem (except getting an appointment, of course!). But it took them three weeks to "approve" the overnight...something they themselves were requiring! So I had both.

Two full nights at the Sleep Center, not much sleep was involved. I had 450 apneas in 3 hours. Jim
