Post-CPAP memory problems?

Post by feelinfab » Thu May 18, 2006 8:37 am

Has anyone encountered memory problems AFTER starting cpap? I've been on for about 3 months, basically doing very well with a few little ups and downs here and there.

But my memory and sometimes focus seem to be getting worse every day. I'm forgetting procedures at work that I have been doing for 2 years, I can't remember things, etc etc etc.

Yet there is also a part of my brain that is amazingly more focused and clear.

I'm trying to get at the root of the problem -- whether it's cpap or stress, etc. It could be that normally, I am about a 100% right-brained person and am working in an admin job which I would normally never do. (Thank you, globalizattion and sleep apnea) It may be that now that I'm "awake," my brain has returned to its normal self and I'm excelling at right-brained stuff and not doing so well at highly procedural stuff.

Just curious what any of you might have experienced. Thought I'd ask before I call my doctor. Thanks!

That is/has happened to me as well. I actually feel different in many ways. I'm having trouble spelling words that I could have spelled in my sleep before (that's actually what I was probably doing in a sense). I feel that our bodies are going through a period of change and adjustment after compensating for sleep issues for years. My guess is that you'll stabalize for the better after a period of time.

...changes in mental acuity could be serious. You might want to see a doctor, they might want to do a pet scan. (Brasshopper, you have six birds, a useless lump of a dog that still seems to be alive, but just barely, and a yard cat that thinks it belongs to you even though you almost never let it in the house and then only when the birds are away in a locked room. You never should have started feeding it no matter how hungry it looked or friendly it was. Oh, yes, and three betas. We won't count pet bugs, consensus is that they are often not actually pets at all. That will be $2800 for the pet scan).

The brain works strangely. For years, I ended up learning a new computer language every 6-12 months and for a couple weeks after I learned the new computer language, I stammered, stuttered, could not form coherent English sentences. Then things fell back together. This could just be something like that - you might be getting good sleep and the brain is reorganizing.

Or it could be a physical side effect. Good luck.

Thank you, both. Very good (and amusing) info to have.

I did end up contacting my md, will hear from him tomorrow.

Still interested in reading other experiences!

I seems that at after 1 year on CPAP my short term memory does not appear to be as good as it used to be. My long term memory seems to be okay and I no longer have the brain fog anymore. I am curious about this let us know if your doctor found anything.
