Sleep test and shaving

Post by Bookbear » Sat May 13, 2006 4:58 pm

Huzzah and woohoo! The sleep center called yesterday evening and they have a cancellation, so my sleep test is tonight, not a month from now! I am happy

However...

The pamphlet that came with the questionaire and instructions mentions "shaving may be necessary" in relation to the chest sensors (I expected that, I am furry). But, I also have a full beard and although they mention sensors placed on the chin, they do NOT mention facial shaving. So...from any of the bearded guys out there in cpap land, did you have to shave your beard for the sleep study? I have called them, but its Saturday and no one seem to be answering the phones now.

well i have a goatee and they just put the chin muscle sensor or whatever further back on my jaw, the worst part i think is the gooey mess they leave in your hair. glad you could finally get that study sooner rather than later... good luck.

I know of a guy who had his sleep study with a full beard. No problems.

Good luck, and be smart when it comes to getting your equipment. Read this forum and search this forum for info.

Goatee

Post by GoofyUT » Sat May 13, 2006 5:41 pm

I have a pretty full and large goatee and moustache, and had NO problem having my split-night sleep study successfully preformed (while I was in the hospital anyway). I did try several masks of all types, and was not able to get a good seal with the single full-face mask I tried because of my goatee (it was early on, but I think it was a ResMed UMFF). So, I'm using a ResMed Swift nasal interface system now and I really like it. When it comes time to get another mask, in a couple of months, I'm going to try hard to find a full-face that works (I'm hopeful about the Fisher&Paykel HC431) so that I'll be able to continue xPAP tx if I have a cold or the flu.

Sorry for being so long winded.

Bottom line: No problem with the beard and the sleep study (except the mess).

Good luck with your new adventure!

Chuck

my flexifit431 works okay with the goatee, one thing i noticed more than anything is that i tend to nose breath alot more with it than with the ff comfortfull 2 which make me mouth breathe like crazy and wind up with a very dry mouth.

Great advice about the FlexFit 431, bro! Thanks much.

BTW, as far as I'm concerned, you've created the hoseheads' credo: GET BLOWN!

Take shampoo and a fine tooth comb with you to the sleep study. After they remove the electrodes in the AM they'll but something on each dab of electrode glue that is in your hair. They will remove some of it but if you can shower and shampoo-comb your hair/beard before rinsing-repeat if needed. The firrst study I had glue in my hair for several days-used the fine comb & shampoo for the titration study and the stuff came right out.

Thanks one and all for the great information. I am jumping in the shower now to get ready to drive to the center. I truly hope they can get all this done in one night...its been nearly 6 months since my regular doc referred me, what with all the delays and hoops the HMO and insurance people have placed in my path. Onwards!
