Plugged sinus

Post by racefan » Tue May 09, 2006 6:31 pm

Hi all I am the new guy. I have a auto titrating<sp?> cpap.(RES MED auto spirit I think) I use an Activa mask with nasal pillows. My problem is this.
My sinus' seemed to start plugging after about 2 or 3 months use. I have tried adjusting the humidifier(no diff.) I have the hoses wrapped to prevent rain out(that worked great)(got them on E bay) Has anybody had this happen & what did you do if anything? Thanks, Mike

I started using this forum in Feb and there has been a lot discussion on sinuses-do a search on sinus and you should get loads of info. If CPAP is making the sinus problem worse see an ENT doc if you can. You might have allergy problems given the time of year.

Faced with the choice between changing one's mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.....Galbraith's Law

it is peak allergy season, for sinus problems you should see an ENT. They may be able to give you a prescription to clear it up. Don't mess with sinus it can easily turn into an infection.

For your equipment:
Keep your humidifier tank, hoses & mask sanitized, if you use distilled or sterile water it will stay sanitized longer.
Change your machine's filter, use a fine filter not just a sponge filter.

I assume it is not allergy problems because it gas been going on for about
8 or 9 months. What do you use to sanitize & how often?
Right now I wash my water tank & hoses & mask(Breeze) with an anti-bacterial hand soap(the pump kind) about once a week or so.

That it has been going on for the better part of a year does not rule out allergies. Many allergens are non-seasonal (your cat, your pillow, your diet, your in-laws, etc.). You may also have a chronic low grade sinus infection, (or not). My intuition would suggest that searching for new and better ways to purify the distilled water in your humidifier is not going to address the underlying problem, nor some new soap or cleansing ritual for the equipment. I agree with krousseau, go see the ENT doc, get to the real issue. I also agree with snoredog that keeping the filters clean and using HEPA filters will reduce the amount of dust and danders that will find their way up your nose and into your nasopharyngeal passages for 8 hrs a day. I'd be more worried about what happens with your nose the other 16 hrs where is is less pampered and nothing between it and the whole rest of the world. You shouldn't have to put up with a chronic sinus problem, it will only get worse. It's time to get BRUTAL! Your ENT doc will be able to quickly sort out an infection vs. an allergy vs. (who knows what?). No need to guess.
