420 USB cable?
My laptop doesn't have a 9 pin port. I was looking at 9pin/USB adapters, but wondered if it might be better to just buy a new cable. What would I need to download the 420 to a USB port.

I'm making some assumptions here as I don't use the 420 but if the original cable terminates in a db9 serial connectoer you should be fune using a usb-serial "dongle" for the physical connection. The software will need to be set up to look for the usb com port instead of com1 (usually com4,5,6 etc... as com1-3 are hard coded for the serial connector and the modem regardless of whether you have them or not. Good luck!

My Laptop doesn't have a DB 9 serial port either. I use a USB/DB 9 serial cable which is configured as serial port 4. The Silverlining software is then configured to check for the 420 on comm 4. The PB software doesn't have a setting for USB so I am assuming there is no USB cable available from PB for the 420.
I used a serial to USB cable on my laptop for a year - in Win2K - no problem, all it needs is the converting cable, and software to define the USB as a serial port. The converting cable has a 9 pin serial connector at one end, and a USB at the other.
By the way, the port can still be used as a USB port for other purposes when the cable is disconnected.
Sl3 doesn't have a USB option for picking up data - but it can work with any serial port number up to 8.
