Embarassing Question.

Post by SsNeo » Sun May 06, 2012 9:52 am

Hi all,

I've been a CPAP user for a year and a half and really can't sleep without it now.

I've had this problem that happens to me after starting CPAP. Do you guys fart alot during the day after using CPAP? I'm serious in asking cos I'm just trying to determine if it's normal or something is wrong with meself.

Thanks and appreciate all input.

Aerophagia...air gets into the digestive track and either comes out as a burp or a fart. Gotta go somewhere.
Some people a minor annoyance and some people it can cause horrible belly pain. It is quite common though. You can read up on it at the link below.

For that problem my gastrologist doctor told me to take a Gas X before I go to bed and one when I got up and to make a long story short, it works for me.

According to one doc, some of his patients have found relief by not eating or drinking anything (other than water) within three or four hours of going to bed.

The same thing happend to me but I was not able to adjust to the pressure which was super high. I eventually ended up going on bipap and having a uppp and the air problem went away when my pressure requirements went down.

I had this when my previous machine, the antique Remstar 101M, at pressure H2O 10 was prescribed to me a couple of months ago. I am currently on a Resmed S9 Elite with pressure 8,4 (building up gradually to work it to 10 H2O) I currently don't have any problems. So it is either the machine or the slightly lower pressure in my case.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about discussing this here. That's what this place is for.

1. I started out at 17 CM-H2O and I had a pretty big aerophagia problem. I lost weight and got very good at sleeping only on my side. I'm now down to 13 CM-H2O, with my doctor's full approval, and the problem is much less.

2. It takes a rather predictable amount of time for most of the air to work its way through. If I go into the bathroom, sit, and break wind to my heart's content for a few minutes after lunch, I'm not much bothered for the rest of the day.

3. And if nothing helps, one can at least draw comfort from the benign nature of most CPAP gas. While the passage of air through our bodies probably doesn't improve that air any, at least it isn't full of the foul sulfurous compounds found in gases generated by fermentation in the gut. If you're quiet not even the dog will notice.
