Your machine will quit (it does not have an alarm) and no, you won't suffocate. Depending on mask type there are vent holes and exhalation valves to fall back on. If it is a concern...buy a little alarm that plugs into the electrical outlet and beeps loudly if power fails. They cost around $15.

The other night we lost power at 6 AM and I didn't wake up until 6:15 AM and I was breathing just fine and under no discomfort at all and the only reason I woke up was things were "too quiet". I actually laid there in bed for 3 or 4 minutes breathing through the vent holes quite comfortably before I realized why things were so quiet.

Some of the masks actually call a part on them an anti esphyxiation vavle.

Just wear your mask with the machine off to see what it feels like. that's how I got acclimated to my mask before turning on the machine and trying to go to sleep. It vents well and doesn't impair my breathing.

One night I forgot to turn my machine on.
I woke up in the middle of the night and turned it on.
No big deal.
