Need to get rid of icky smell

Post by Carmen » Wed May 02, 2012 4:48 am

I'm on vacation. On my way here, I crashed in a "pet friendly" Comfort Inn. The room smelled like a wet dog but exhaustion took over and we stayed the night. Now that I'm in a nice, clean, non-smelly hotel room, my CPAP, I swear, still smells like a wet dog when I first turn it on. I've rinsed the cushions and the filters. Is there anything else I can do to fix the smell within the limited resources of a hotel room?

Go to the local barber supply store and grab a bottle of Hydracide or Barbicide. They both use the same active ingredients as Control III, but have a blue dye added.

Get a 2 quart or larger plastic tub from the dollar store and mix your cleaning solution so that it's a deep blue.

Soak your grey filter, cushion(s) and hose for at least an hour, then rinse and dry.

Soak your mask and humidifier tank for at least 4 hours.

Unclip the humidifier from your machine and look at the rear of where the tank goes. There is a small L-Shaped plastic and silicone sub-assembly there that seals the humidifier to the machine and the tank to the humidifier.
Hold the assembly loosely and flip the humidifier upside down.
On the bottom of the humidifier is a small retaining tab. Push in on the tab and pull the assembly out of the humidifier.

Soak the humidifier sub-assembly for at least 4 hours.

Your equipment will smell like the cleaning solution when you first turn it on, but it's an improvement over the wet-dog smell.
When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

I have had this problem a couple times and I sprayed the mask with lavendar spray.

If there is a natural store near you go and get some essential oil, put a few drops on a q-tip or puff and place it beside your air intake, Once you turn your machine on it will pull the smell of whatever oil you buy through your machine. I always carry a vial of puresleep with me...... just in case. I like the spice or calm ones.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I use Dr. Bronner soaps to wash my mask, tubing and tank - peppermint, eucalyptus, lavendar... leaves everything smelling wonderful!

Cheers,

Since you are in a hotel, many of these suggestions are good, but may not work in your situation. If there is a way to open a window, place your machine near the open window and let it run while you are out. The fresh air may reduce the smell .

That may be what I go with--I really don't want to be running around a strange city looking for stuff. Does it hurt the machine to just run? I wonder if the hotel gift shop has anything scented (at Disney World).

What about getting some lemons from room service or snagging some at a restaurant? You could rinse the parts in lemon juice water. Might help.

Cheap incense cones--lavender, herbal, something mild but nice. (dollar store, etc.)
Don't light them, put one behind the machine near the air intake.
If you can just barely smell it masked up and running, good.
if the scent is a little too strong, slide it a little farther away.
Jen's got a great idea with the lemons. All you need is a WEDGE.
Scratch the rind a little to release the scent, and put the piece of rind behind the machine.
After a day of two the flesh might ferment.

That's why I recommended the Hydracide and Dollar Store tub. Seems like there's a Sally Beauty Supply on every street corner...
