We had some typical midwestern thunderstorms roll through during the night or wee hours of the morning. I woke briefly to the hear and see thunder and lightening and promptly went back to sleep.
I woke up at 6:15 to total quiet. I mean total quiet as in no exhale noise from my mask nor the very faint hum of my machine (I can't call it a bird call yet).. Yep...power was off. Funny thing is that I was breathing quite comfortably with mask on and my mouth clamped totally shut like it normally is. No dry mouth. Just breathing through my Aloha nasal pillows vents. Not stifling at all. I thought the machine was on until I realized it wasn't.
I have never bothered to get a back up power supply. Long term outages are fairly rare here and normally if power goes out during a thunderstorm it comes back on quickly and I just stay awake and wait it out.
Long term outage..well my mother lives in town and my sister has a generator so I have options and that is why I never have bothered with getting my own backup power supply.
I did check my reports and the power went off at 6:00 on the button. When I got up I immediately checked my cell phone to get the time because I knew I would want to know how long it had been off.
So for 15 minutes I was breathing quite comfortably through the vents on my nasal pillow. Have no idea what woke me up but it was not discomfort that is for sure because I laid there for 2 or 3 minutes just breathing like I normally do when I wake up...enjoying the comfort of the bed. Then I realized things were a little too quiet. No distress at all.
Power came back on around 6:30...only problem I had was that I had to wait for the power to come back on to get my morning coffee. I always start my coffee pot first thing when I get up in the morning...often before the stop at the bathroom. My morning coffee is an absolute must have for me.....

Re: Power outage & the Aloha
Pugsy, I recently ordered a respironics battery pack for camping and power outages. I may also pick up a goal zero solar charger, converter and battery pack for extended camping and power outages. I have my camping coffee pot and camping stove to heat it if need be. The only problem I have is I have a well so now shower if the power is out.

Re: Power outage & the Aloha
I love my Swift FX also...I haven't had a power outage using it like I had early this morning though I have tried breathing with it with the machine off and I don't have any problems with it either.
I am guessing that the vent holes are adequate to prevent much rebreathing of any CO2O exhaled.
This morning I got to test things under real life circumstances and the Aloha worked great.
I don't see why the others wouldn't either but I do know that the exhale noise with the Aloha is less..so there is something different.
GerryK...I am on well water out here as well since I live in the boonies. I used to go camping a lot when I did a lot of horseback riding and some endurance races. I don't do it anymore so I just don't worry so much about power anymore. Most of it was primitive camping and if I still did a lot of racing then I would probably get more proactive about having additional power supply.
I have been on the machine 3 years the end of May...this is the first time that I have had any significant outage and even then...30 minutes. I have been lucky and probably now have jinxed myself.

Re: Power outage & the Aloha
I am saving up some to get an automatic whole house standby generator. I had a generator that I set up to run just about everything in our old house including the fridge, freezer and ac but I sold it with the house. It was just too dangerous having a portable generator set up like that around. All it would take is someone not hooking something up correctly and they would be dead.
