The index is the average number of events per hour for the duration of the time spent using the machine.

wiki/index.php/Category:CPAP_Definitions Glossary explaining most of the terms you might see and wonder about.

AHI (Apnea Hypopnea Index) is the number of apneas and hypopneas per hour. Or an index for sleep apnea. 5-20 mild, 21-50 moderate, above 50 severe.

Forum member Robysue has some additional information about some of the terms mentioned in a sleep study in her blog here.

Apnea, hypopnea index. Basically how many times an hour on average you stop breathing for more than 10 seconds (apnea) or don't breathe deep enough /efficiently enough to properly oxygenate yourself. Generally under 5 is considered "good". An AHI of 5 means on average your have an apnea/hypopna event 5 times an hour.

How does the CPAP machine detect apneas/hypopneas? Seemed like I needed a whole lot of wires to detect those during my sleep test.

The wires were for the brain waves and heart. This just tests the resistance so it knows the difference between breathing, not breathing, almost not breathing and obstruction.
