Power outage

Post by hecate » Wed Mar 29, 2006 1:20 pm

Last night or mor correctly this morning at 4:00am we had a power outage in our area due to storms. The lack of air flowing through my swift woke me up immediatly, but like an idiot even though I knew there was no power I kept sucking on my swift. I have no idea what I thought I was going to get through it. Eventually I realized I wasn't going to get anything an opend my mouth to breath. I really am smarter than that sounds

I slept the rest of the morning till 8:00 without my cpap and boy could I tell the difference. I was thinking before this that the cpap wasn't doing much for me, but now I know the difference. I never want to sleep without it. Does any one use a UPS with their machine? How long does it last on UPS?

I have mine hooked up to my Computer back-up, I never had it kick in but 12 sec at a time. It's a APC Back-Up NS 1250, It runs my two computer systems for 18 minutes, I don't know how long it would run the CPAP.

The electric went down for 2 hours the other nite, so I shut them down, but it was before bedtime.

For real power outages, a deep cycle battery, and trickle charger will give longer times. Jim

My Respironics APAP set at 8.5--10 cm. (without humidifier) will run for 6 hours using a fully charged 12v, 9 ampere-hour sealed lead-acid battery. At that setting the unit draws an average of 1.5 amps @ 12v.

My Remstar Plus, set at 10cm, CFlex at 1, runs fine for two eight hour nights when hooked up to my Xantrex 400 Powerpak. There's a C-20 (20 amp hour) battery inside the Powerpak. Might even be enough juice to get through a third night, but I've not pushed it that far. Powerpak readout says 0% battery remaining after the second night, even though the Remstar kept going just fine.

I don't hook the humidifier up to the Powerpak, as the shape of the AC will damage it. So when I'm home I just plug the humidifier into wall current, and the Remstar into the Powerpak. All set for the Florida hurricane season this time!
