Pros of BiPap?

Post by Swordz » Tue Mar 28, 2006 5:49 pm

I understand the Bipap is usually prescribed for: UARS, severe apneatics, and those w/ cpap tolerance issue (due mostly to high pressures?). I am thinking of getting a BiPap auto, as I need temp treatment until I can save $$$ for my MMA/GA surgery.

My school is giving me extra $$ for a Bipap, and I think I"m sold on the Respironics BiPap Auto. Also, how do I get my Rx for a Bipap w/out a nother study? I'm assuming a cpap/apap Rx won't usually work for obtaining a bipap.

Will I be the only 1 rockin the Bipap auto on here, or others got experience with it?

Soccer: The beautiful game.

Copy of original script, and a call to CPAP.Com and you are in business.

Good luck, I am sure you can make yourself happy with that machine.

Respironics Auto BiPap

Post by Moogy » Tue Mar 28, 2006 8:14 pm

I have the Auto BiPap, and it is great! Very comfortable, and many flexible options, which can be a plus if you expect your pressures needs to change. There are several of us on the forum who use this machine.

The exhale relief is supposed to be considerably more than you get with CPAP w/cflex, which matters more at high pressures.

Any doctor who is willing (maybe your family doctor) can write you a prescription for an auto bipap based only on the initial sleep study. You don't have to have another titration study to prove you need a bipap. See the prescription information on cpap.com for what the prescription needs to say. My DME asked the doc to write "Auto Bipap 4-20 cm" on the script. This was before we had the results from my first titration study.

https://www.cpap.com/cpap-faq/Prescriptions.html#219 This lists the cpap.com requirements for ordering a bipap auto:

BiPAP Auto <prescription wording>

Contains one of the following words or phrases "BiPAP", "BiLevel", "VPAP", "BiPAP Auto"
Contains your physicians contact information
Contains your physicians signature

Inspiration pressure (IPAP) and expiration pressure (EPAP) are NOT required for the BiPAP Auto.

If you get the software (and without it, you lose some of the advantages of this particular flexible machine) be sure to download the correct version of MyEncore. It is not the version listed on the main link--it is a beta that is set up to handle auto bipap. Once you get the machine, check on the forum to get the right link.

I don't know what your pressure requirement is, but if it isn't high then the bipap is probably overkill.
