Second Honeymoon???

Post by Ergin » Sun Mar 26, 2006 10:53 pm

I started CPAP treatment about 8 months ago.
My initial configuration was Resmed S8 Escape + Activa @12cm.
The first month the treatment went great, I felt like a new person sleeping
7hrs per day instead of 10.

Soon after the end of the "honeymoon" treatment started losing its effect,
I was back to my old routine, I could not stay awake in the afternoon and I
was sleeping 9.6hrs on "average".
In the mean time I kept using using the cpap religiously, because it cured
my sore throat by allowing the nose breathing again.

At this point I started questioning the reliabity diagnosis and contacted my
doctor. He said my prescription should have changed since I had gained
12lbs after the first month of the treatment and I should take another
titration study. In the mean time I did my own sleep study, by increasing
my pressure by 1cm to 13cm. This quick fix did not work either and I
decided to invest my money on new equipment instead of new sleep study.

First I replaced the mask, Activa was very noisy and tend to slide upwards
during sleep and wake me up. I switched to Somnoplus, which is much
quieter and more stable.

I bought Remstar Auto to get more feedback about my sleep quality.
After 3 weeks of experimentation I am now using my APAP in a CPAP like
mode with pressure range 12cm-13cm (my Doctor was right about not
needing APAP), cflex level 3. The humidifier does not provide great benefit
beyond being a good "muffler". Now, however, I start feeling like in my
honeymoon again, I sleep 6-7 hrs per day mostly at night.

Here is the list of the major changes:
1) Noise: Both the machine (with the muffler) and the mask are quieter.
I can barely feel them after falling asleep.
2) Filter: Remstar has a two stage filter which might have a positive impact
on nasal congestion.
3) Cflex: Exhaling is much easier now.
4) Leak Compensation: Remstar can compensate leaks, whereas S8 Escape
has no idea about it.

After all, I am now convinced that the equipment is very important in CPAP
therapy and one should experiment to find the most comfortable and
suitable setup to get good results.

I would also like to know if anybody had a second honeymoon and how long
it did last.

Ergin, nice post on your second honeymoon. I especially like the part where you purchased an Auto instead of a new sleep study. Even though you say you're not using the Auto, if nothing else, it will and does act as an in-home sleep study.

The Remstar is a good solid machine. Good choice.

No second honeymoon for me, my first one never ended (but then I started out with a Remstar Auto).

Kudos to you.
