ok confused about events per hour

Post by pharmwoman » Wed Mar 22, 2006 3:19 pm

Ok saw my sleep doc today, he moved the pressure up from 9-10--he said I have gone from 20 events an hour to 10, and less than 5 is normal. Im just confused, I thought I would have no events anymore. But I generally feel so much better, any thoughts??
Thanks:)

Below 5 is cosidered to be normal. Many of us have been able to get ours down to 1+/- (as reported by the software)

Good that you are headed in the right direction.

It is believed that people experiencing less than five apneas plus hypopneas per hour are at no greater risk of stroke, heart disease, excessive daytime sleepiness and other OSA sequelae than people with no apneas or hypopneas at all. There's evidence to support that conclusions although it is far from a settled question. Therefore, your doctor's goal is for your treatment to reduce your events to as few as possible and to at most five or less per hour while keeping the treatment tolerable where you remain compliant for a long time.

Zero apneas and hypopneas just don't turn out to be possible for a lot of people. Fortunately, they don't seem to need to get all the way to zero for you to feel fine. Even people who are considered completely free from OSA still stop or restrict their breathing once in a while with no harm done. Our bodies have a certain ability to persevere in spite of minor sleep disruptions. Good thing, too. If just a few apneas/hypopneas were dangerous people like me with dozens of arousals per hour would probably be dead already.

so I guess what youre saying is 10 events down from 20 is good, and it can continue to get better?? I would just hate to think 10 is the best I can do, thanks:)

I can only speak for the one sleep doctor that I'm seeing but his goal in that case would be to work on finding a way to see that number much lower than 10.
