Getting Off Provigil

Post by Moogy » Sat Mar 18, 2006 6:30 pm

I started on Provigil about the same time I had my first sleep study. Since my BIPAP therapy is going so well, my doc and I agreed I will try going without. I tried today, and I am SO sleepy, even though I slept 9.5 hrs with the machine last night, and felt great when I awoke.

I am thinking maybe I am trying too soon. I have only 10 days on the BIPAP, and maybe that is not enough for me to make it without a little help.

The Provigil is not giving me any problems at all. I just don't want to take a stimulant if I can be ok without it. I have been taking only one per day.

Any advice?

moogy--same thing goes for getting off stimulants as getting off benzos. it may be too soon, but when you do, cut down, not out at first on a schedule that's reasonable. your fatigue may be a way of your body craving the provigil.

Moogy,
Are you able to exercise any?
Believe it or not, I started exercising just 20 minutes on M-W-F mornings on an elliptical trainer and it has boosted my energy. The urge for the afternoon nap completely disappears when I keep on schedule. As soon as I slack and miss a day or two, the afternoon blahs hit me again.

Just a thought..

Luckily Provigil is a very "clean" drug and is unlike other stimulants. Unlike caffeine and amphetamines, it is not addictive. However, even with enough sleep, Provigil will make you more alert than you would be without taking it. I have M.S. and fatigue is very common with it. However I never have problems stopping Provigil. But, you have to get used to what it feels like to not use Provigil. You will be less alert for a little while unless you compensate by jump-starting your batteries with some exercise. Good Luck,

Chris

Thanks for the advice. I decided to continue the Provigil for a while until I am pretty sure I have repaid my extensive sleep debt. I have only been on my bipap therapy for a couple of weeks now. After I think I am well adjusted, then I will try getting off of the Provigil again. I am only taking one per day, so it is hard to cut down gradually....
