Hi my name is Brenda and I just got the cpcp machine on monday of this week. I leave it on for about an hour and a half a night then take it off. I am wide awake. Any suggestions? I use mirage swift mask.

Welcome to the forum, Brenda. (My real name is also Brenda!)

The CPAP isn't doing you any good while you are AWAKE, so the main goal is to get to sleep, right?

What kind of CPAP are you using, with what pressure settings? Can you tell what is keeping you awake--the noise, the pressure, the face mask? Were you able to sleep with the CPAP during a sleep study?

A couple of ideas:
Many on the forum say they get accustomed to the mask by wearing it while reading or watching TV. Then they can handle going to sleep with it on.

If your pressure is high, you might do better with a low, gradually increased pressure, which can be done with a ramp feature. Many machines have this feature. (My therapist thought I wouldn't need it, so she didn't turn it on. That only worked a couple of days, and someone from the forum told me how to turn it on.)

Tell us more about your situation, and I am sure you will get some helpful responses from forum members.

Brenda, it takes some people time to get used to the mask and pressure.

Let me assure you that it is most definitely worth the trouble.

As suggested, wear the mask while watching TV or reading. Just learn to relax with the mask on with no pressure.

Some people take it slow, others faster. I was determined the first night to keep the mask on. I wore it for 7.5 hours. It was a long night but I did get some sleep, not a lot. The next night was a little better. I've been on the mask for a month now and don't mind it at all. I'm asleep within 5 minutes of putting it on. It's a process we all went through.

You might try this. You said you keep it on for 1.5 hours. OK, tonight keep it on for 1.75 hours. The next for 2.0 hours and so on. One night you'll surprise yourself and wake up in the morning with the mask still on!

Failure is not an option!

Jim

give it time and don't give up!

I've been through 4 machines and 3 different masks before I finally got comfortable. Took me about 6 months, but everyday it got better.

Read through some of the threads in this forum .. there are many just like you going through the same thing .. you're not alone and you're in good company here!
