Camping problems

Post by newguy » Sat Mar 11, 2006 6:23 pm

Just getting going, had the titration sleep study and due for a prescription in a week. Thanks for this forum, which is very helpful. I have lots of questions, but one is bugging me. I camp a lot and backpack. I see that several machines have a 12 volt option and also see the AEIOmed Aura battery option, so it may be possible to car-camp, but it seems obvious that I will have to be away from a machine in order to backpack. All I know at this point is that I have moderately severe apnea (26/hour) including centrals. Maybe this is a question for a PCP or sleep doctor, but can I still backpack, skipping treatment for 3 or 4 days at a time? Seems that people do skip now and then for various reasons?

I'm probably going to get lambasted for saying this, but what's new ....

Go for you. You can't let cpap rule your life with an iron-clad fist. Who knows, you could stay home from your camping trip, and your house get hit by a plane (let's hope not).

Many people don't use their cpap when they have a cold. Early in my therapy, if I had a night away from my husband, I wouldn't use mine. But ultimately, I came to realize that I sleep better with it.

I think you should continue to do the enjoyable things in life, and use your cpap when you are able.

Have fun camping. I love to camp and fish, but I use a small travel trailer now.

My wife got paranoid about me when I was diagnosed. We figured for many years I had it, I just finally decided to do the deed and go forward. My wife was waiting for each breath to be my last and I told her nothing has changed except the number of professionals who know I really have apnea. Do your best to do your best and don't sweat the small stuff. Your odds are vastly improved by treating whenever practical and doing the best you can.
