Chin Strap Options

Post by LaurieP » Wed Jan 04, 2012 12:49 pm

Hi, I have been working with my Mom on using the CPAP machine. She has done very well but has had problems with the chin strap. She won't use a FFM, as soon as I mention it might be the best option she says she won't use the machine than. So I'm making it work with what we have, my take is something is better than nothing. If she doesn't use the strap the leaks are out of the good range.

My question: Is there a chin strap made for woman or one that you have used that isn't really alot of material?? Since I have never used one myself I'm at a loss.

Thanks for any ideas or helpful hints.

Happy New Year!!!!

I understand about the less material rather than more, however - my first chinstrap was the PapCap chinstrap, which is a cotton cap that goes on your head, which is what the chinstrap attaches to with velcro. I ordered the smallest size they have.
I actually prefer this one as it's most comfortable, even though I hate all the stuff already attached to my head - another reason being that my hair is very slippery and the PapCap keeps my Swift nasal pillow masks in place better. If this isn't an issue, then a different chinstrap would certainly work.
I also have a Respironics Premium chinstrap which is also pretty comfortable and fully adjustable.
After over a year on CPAP, I'm finally getting to the point where my mouth is staying shut all night, so I'll have to put some velcro on the inside of my mask straps to keep it in place with the chinstrap gone.

Cheers,
xena

If you want a minimal chin strap, I have worn a sullivan by Resmed--a very cheap strap,
and thinner than most other brands.
I have split the straps lengthwise in half from the ends down to about an inch above my ears.
When I put half in front and half behind the top, rounded part of my head, it stays on and holds my jaw up.

How do you know she needs a chin strap?

Thanks for the replies. I know she needs a chin strip because I have been reading her reports. The sleep clinic wanted her to use a FFM but it is too uncomfortable for her so we are using the Swift LT for her with a chin strap. If she doesn't use the strip she says that her mouth opens and she gets annoying leaks that woke her up.

I completely sympathize with your mother. Completely. I was initially started on a nasal mask and nearly lost my mind. It just made me so claustophobic. I use a resmed swif fx nasal pillows with a chin strap. Not to happy with the one I have though so I am looking at this one. It looks minimally invasive. https://www.bestcpapprice.com/HALO-Chin ... p_385.html. Also, if she has a humidifier, you might want to raise the levels which might help keep her nose clearer. A stuffy nose might be why she mouth breathes.
