Re: CPAP and Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is apparently a newer name for what used to be called syndrome X: Obesity, HTN, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. More common in Native American and Hispanic populations. If I'm not mistaken.

Re: CPAP and Metabolic Syndrome
I'm very sceptical about "Metabolic Syndrome" and "prediabetic." To me, it sounds a lot like
"You're doing the things we told you not to, and nothing bad has happened, so we're going to make up a name so we can scare you even more" syndrome.
"You're doing the things we told you not to, and nothing bad has happened, so we're going to make up a name so we can scare you even more" syndrome.

Re: CPAP and Metabolic Syndrome
Archangle, You're a skeptical guy and I appreciate that about you. But from clinical experience treating people with Metabolic syndrome or syndrome X...I personally believe it's a useful diagnosis and is most valuable in predicting future events...opening the door to prevent them.archangle wrote:I'm very sceptical about "Metabolic Syndrome" and "prediabetic." Science tends to define things and corral them with definitions. Apneas and hypopneas and Reras all have artificial definitions which have proved to be useful.
It's true that metabolic syndrome has much of it's origins in excessive caloric intake of a high carb diet. But people in poverty eat what's available to them...and what they can afford. And this syndrome is over-represented in populations in poverty.
There is a statistically clear link between OSA and type 2 diabetes. So I'm not at all surprised that treating the apnea also improves the metabolic syndrome. Progress and knowledge often come in small forward increments.

Jamis
