I have a Respironics BiPap Pro2 that appears to have had the hours usage completely reset.

The only way I know this can be done is if someone deliberately shorts the nvram battery out inside the machine but it can be done.

This machine has its date set to in 1988. Nothing I have tried will set the date to current.

In discussions with some other of our resident experts I believe I have to return the machine to Respironics to reset the BIOS.

Because the date appears to get reset to Jan 1 00.00 1988 when shorted (I have no idea why that date) I have been able to work out when I think the machine was reset. It was some months before I obtained it. It was sold to me as a damaged machine - by water getting into the motor & air sensor tubes - I fixed the motor & tubes.

Interestingly it runs 100% normally (except the date) if I use masks with very low built-in leak rates (under 20 litres/min) but it behaves badly if the masks have high built-in leak rates (i.e. 45 litres/min). Whith high-leak rate masks it flips to EPAP very quickly into the IPAP cycle. I believe this is because some required base data got lost when the machine was reset.

What this is leading me to say is that I wonder if some outfits use the re-setting the battery trick to wipe out hours usage. I am guessing that in the more sophisticated units such as the current BiPaps, this may wipe out required data. I have no evidence that anyone does this but having looked into this particular BiPap I am wondering.

It's probably like the UNIX epoch (January 1 1970 00:00:00 GMT).

I'm taking the whole rig to the DME in the morning to see if they can make it run. I can't find any combination to make it work for me.

Well the machine was outputing 20cm come hell or hi water. Traded it and decided perhaps we should run the new one for a while to see if it had any new bugs to throw at me. It works well, and with the auto and c-flex it's almost like it isn't there at all. More tomorrow after a real night. This will be the fourth night on a working machine in eight nights of trying.

I'm convinced this will be the machine type I will use, so I'm ready to get serious about getting the software and card reader. Can anyone give me useful directions to get started?

Well Congrats to you. What a hassle you've had.

PM is on its way with some pointers.

Well, the machine worked as did my makeshif chin strap. Now to practice and learn to control "harness hair". I think I'll wait a while to buy software and card reader.

TerryB.......Luck with the 'harness hair'. Try a styling gel in the a.m. Not the mousse......too lite. Most of all, DO NOT go to bed with wet or even damp hair......the only cure for that is a total head-soak.
