Waiting on Machine

I had the 2nd sleep study with the CPAP Saturday night. Doctor called today and said he will try and get script faxed over to DME tomorrow. I spoke with them and they have the machine in stock. They will call me in and get me going. I slept better with the machine. I have severe apnea. apnea + hypopnea index was 61.7 ( test before study with CPAP)
I'm anxious to get it. Worried now about sleeping a few nights without it. I've read alot of posts and kind of worried that most people don't even nap without it. Guess if went this long another night or 2 wont hurt i hope. Any suggestions on anything i can do the next few nights until i bring the machine home? I'm definitely sleeping on my side now. Most of my apneas were when i was on my back.

Waiting between sleep study & getting your machine is normal. I had my sleep study on March 9th and got my machine on the 25th.

Sleeping on your side might help, but just try to relax & tell yourself that very soon you will be getting the therapy you need. If you only have to wait a few days, you will be better off than most.

Which machine are you getting?

The nurse at the doctors office said the Doctor was prescribing the Resporonics Remstar i believe. I asked her to tell him i wanted the s-9 Resmed. She said he may change it and may not. He states he gets better info off the Resporonics. So well see. I told her all the research i did id prefer the s-9. Ill know tomorrw. Shes supposed to fax over to the DME i selected. They have both in stock and have already pre approved through insurance, so maybe bring home tomorrow or Wed at the latest i would think.

The doctor writes the order for the cpap or auto cpap and pressure ranges, humidity and mask of patient choice. You should have the choice of machine just like you have the choice of mask. Dr does not need to determine the exact brand of machine. Make sure you get a fully data capable machine and get the brand that you want after your research. It is very difficult to make changes once in hand.

It is true - as apneawho says - that the Dr does NOT choose the brand of machine. He may prefer Respironics because he prefers the software. But in the end the choice is YOURS. He will write a script for the pressure range etc. YOU will have final say on which machine you buy.

Not just S9. S9 Autoset, or at least S9 Elite. Resmed uses the term S9 in a lot of different machines and some you do not want. Not just Remstar, but PR System One Remstar Auto with A/FLEX, as Philips Respironics uses the term Remstar in a lot of different machines, and has for some years ago for machines which are so old in design they are no longer available new.

Yes, you really should insist on a machine that records flow data, such as the ones mentioned above, and not just compliance data. That way, you can download the results and see how you are doing.

You could try the couch for side sleeping while waiting for the machine; some find it helpful.

Insist on the S9 autoset. Also make sure you get a comfortable mask. Try on the different kinds (nasal, full face, etc...). See which one leaks the least. Ask the DME to allow you to try on a mask and to hook up a display machine which has your setting. It'll be the "mask-fight" that you'll need to win at home.

WIll i be able to chose the machine or will his script be specific to one. The DME told ne he only issues typically one brand. He has his staff trained on the software of the machine. I have read alot and think i want the Resmed S-9 auto. i told them thats what i wanted. waiting on the scrip right now.

I was told by my DME that my doc preferred PR. I chose the S9 Autoset. My doc can get his own machine!

I spoke to DME and they have to fill the script as it is written. Well see what happens. I may have to change Doctors unless he can convince me why i need that particular machine vs the one i have polled and done research on. They talk to me like im totally ignorant to this and the doctor knows best what i need. This whole experience has been a trying challange. Differnt costs varied over 700 on machines. Yes i found there are some crooks out there that wanted me to pay the differance on what the insurance didnt cover. One wanted a 1000. set up see then purchase the machine the next month. I finally found one that was more in line with what my Insurance outlined.

Perhaps if you call the Dr's office & ask that they modify the script by not ticking "Dispense as written" so you will be free to choose the brand that you want... if you tell the DME that is what you are going to do they may see that you are serious.

Remember, it's S9 "AutoSET." There's an S9 Escape Auto that you do NOT want. When you get it, look on the top of the machine next to the power button and it should say "escape, escape auto, elite, or AutoSet." If it says "escape", run screaming from the building and escape from that DME and find another one.

People have reported before that some DMEs will lie about the model name.

If the doctor prescribes a pressure range, such as 8-12 instead of just 10, it may help cut down on arguments from the DME.
