Updating Prescription?

Post by Lizistired » Sun Oct 23, 2011 9:48 pm

My prescription expires in December. I do not want to have another sleep study. Waste of my time and my insurance company's money. Most of all, I am not going to sleep without my machine when I don't have to. Especially not to prove to someone else that I need it.
Has anyone just gone to their PCP and gotten a new script and not bothered with the sleep doc?
I'm not sure if my PCP would do it since he works for the same hospital as the sleep doc and sleep clinic. They would lose about $3000 if he spent 2 minutes writing a script.
I have screenshots of my O2 drops without the mask even with no events. So if I do have to go to the sleep doc I think I have enough ammunition to avoid a sleep study. I'm just wondering what others have experienced with this. Is there a big push to do another sleep study?

I know that my PCP or sleep doc won't push for another sleep study if they know my AHI's are low, everything else checks out, and that I'm feeling pretty good.

Frankly, I would have to be tied up to do it again, especially if there isn't a damn good reason!

My primary doctor ordered my sleep study. The results were read by a sleep doctor, but he sent the results back to my primary doctor... so I never saw my primary doctor. Ask your primary care doctor to give you a new one. The prescription can be written by anyone (even a dentist).

There was a notice up in my DME supplier's last week when I was there about prescriptions having to be renewed every year. I asked about this new rule, and the guy just asked me the name of my sleep doc and said "no worries - we'll contact her office and update it for you".

No mention of another sleep study at all.

Hope it's this easy for others.

Cheers,
xena

I've gone to my sleep Dr for a new prescription (mine had expired) when I wanted to get a different piece of equipment. No study required, no problems. I think my DME has also called my sleep Dr to get my prescription updated when he needed to. I don't think you'll need a new study.

I have had the same experience. When I found out that my machine was not data capable I called my primary doctor's office and he wrote me a RX for the machine that I wanted and sent it to the DME. I would imagine yours would do the same to just renew your RX.

Good luck!

Actually, I haven't had it renewed. I've only been "masking" since July. However, both my doctors told me that's how it would go. Both know what they are doing... and I trust them. Was not pushed to go for a titration either, so I didn't, verrry happily I might add! When my sleep doc read the data a few months later, she said that things were going just fine.

My initial Rx was limited to one time use, but then I asked for a generic Rx for cpap and mask of patient's choice with no expiration so I could buy things online whenever I want. My sleep doc had no problem giving me that....
