Noise out there in the air

I've been having the tinnitus too, in my right ear only, in kind of an episodic pattern- it gets worse and then gets better, seemingly for no reason. It sounds like a constant hum in the background, kind of a medium tone. I've had the audiology tests and a nerve test (ABR), and although I lose some hearing when the ringing gets bad, it doesn't seem to be permanent (yet). The official diagnosis from just yesterday is 'hydrops' or fluid accumulation in the cochlea... exacerbated by stress, caffeine, high blood pressure (I'm kind of borderline). Doc gave me a prescription for diuretic to try for a few months to see if that will prevent the attacks. He also said that CPAP has nothing to do with the hydrops. Strangely, I'm also having visual problems in the left eye (hearing problem in the right ear) and the eye thing is also due to fluid buildup making a little blister under the retina; also affected by stress, caffeine and all that stressful stuff, and oh yeah, obstructive sleep apnea!. So, I'm on a caffeine reduction program and have to do something about the work stress.

It's continuous. Someone else used the word "buzzing" and that is probably the best description. It's not all the time, but it is getting more frequent and lasting longer. Sometimes I don't notice when it starts or stops - I'll just suddenly realize it's there.

Mine comes and goes.

I've had tinnitus for several years--in my (bad) right ear.
Wearing a hearing aid helps me tune it out.
Before hearing aids; it drove me bananas,
All I could do for my sanity was imagine a little tone-deaf angel sitting on my shoulder singing to me.

"Relax and Sleep" actually, it's also available for iPhone but doesn't have as many options.

You also have a oxygen concentrator running too. Could you be hearing the noise from the concentrator? The concentrators are very noise and also give off a lot of heat!

Mine doesn't really feel like it is in my ears - it's distant. I think I'm going to see if I can get in to see an audiologist. ENT doctor said "everybody has it, don't worry about it."

Let me tell you something - DO NOT MESS AROUND WITH RETINAL PROBLEMS - find the best doctor you can find and make sure that it is OK. Get a second opinion...and a third. I had a detached retina caused by an auto accident. I thought I just needed to have my prescription changed and postponed seeing the doctor for a few weeks. It turns out I had a detached retina and had to have emergency surgery. Now, the delay did not hurt me, but the surgeon used the wrong method to repair it and it left me permanently blind in that eye. A detached retina can cause you to lose your eyesight in an instant.

It's not when I'm in bed that I hear it. It's during the day or evening. Early morning right now and not hearing it. Yesterday, it started around 4:00 and continued until right before I went to bed.

Do you hear it OUTSIDE of your house. Or only in your house? If it is only in your house it could be something like a phone charger(transformer). If you have an older house could be your door bell system (If you have one). I had a humming that I would hear on very cold nights while in bed. It was driving me nuts. I checked several electrical things in the house, finally pulled the main breaker and it was STILL there a low hum noise. I then went outside and could hear it even louder, the transformer on the electric pole in my backyard was humming. When it was very cold the wire to my house became taught, that wire connects right to my bedroom wall, it was transmitting the sound thru the wire to the wall.... I called the electric co and they replaced the wire to my house and the noise went away!

Oh, no. I hear it no matter where I am. Office, other people's houses, hotels, shopping, etc. And it comes and goes - more coming than going lately, though.
