My roommate was doing laundry all afternoon and there is lots of construction down the road from us so I can't tell if it was noticeable in Montreal.

We have small tremors here quite often. There is a fault line going down the St Laurence river. We had one about that size just after my youngest was born, it was a real bummer because we had just finished renovating and painting and after the shaking all the cracks were back.

The busiest bridge in our city is closed down because the earthquake widened an already existing crack... maybe now they'll finally come up with funding to repair it!

I was sitting in a parked car and got quite a jolt when it hit; can't imagine what it felt like down in VA. Pity the poor folk in/on the bay bridge and tunnel at the time - they must have been terrified.

Even felt it here on the south shore of Long Island NY! The county Emergency Prep center had just finished a drill, getting ready for the possible hurricaine. Shook them boys up a bit!

You folks on the east coast might think about some kind of power backup with Hurricane Irene on it's way. Looks like that will probably do more damage than the earthquake.

I'm glad everyone reporting here from VA is OK, as well as people from CO.

Felt it here, in New Paltz, a couple of hours north of NYC.

Thought of Karen (Pad-a-Cheek) right away, for she's not that far away from the epicenter. I was in Williamsburg, starting my car in the Target parking lot. My car shook. You know how old cars can shake. Well, mine isn't old. Thought something was wrong with its computer, so turned it off and back on and everything was OK. Didn't know we'd had an earthquake until I got home an hour or so later. My hubby was outside working with a friend when it happened. They both commented, "oh, we had an earthquake," and went right on working. Now, we wait for Isabel to come up the coast. We do need the rain. The Dismal Swamp on the NC/VA border has been burning for 3 weeks and some days the smoke is really bad.

In my butt (Sorry Karen, I couldn't resist) My chair started vibrating/shaking, then I realized that was nuts couldn't be the chair must be the bldg shaking. Stood up and asked the co-worker in the office next to mine, "Is the bldg moving?" He says, "Feels like it to me." OMG earthquake...mild effect here must be big somewhere. Then, the tech support lines start ringing. Just one other person in the office felt it. Found out later lots of people evacuated the joined bldgs & stood around waiting to hear the details.

I felt it in Saint-Hyacinthe (this is at 45Km East from Montreal, 85Km North from Vermont US border). I was in front of a clerk at a store (ground level) and the counter and some electric pipes started moving (I sense the ground too), I said to myself what is this????? I was suddenly dizzy. Yes an earthquake some where. It shake a couple of seconds and then again another 5 seconds or so, it was not strong I should say but enough to feel it. Several employees noticed it. A friend of mine in Montreal told me she didn't feel it.

I'm very glad nobody was injured in Virginia and the other places around.

I'm a little late on this, but man, did I feel it, too! Well, I actually HEARD it more than felt it. For about 20 seconds it sounded like three army helicopters had landed on my roof; the noise was horrendously loud and consistent. My neighbors and I all came outside, really not sure what it was at first. Again, for some reason we had more noise than shaking, I think. I'm in Henrico. A friend in Chesterfield didn't hear much of anything but stuff fell off her walls and everything shook for quite a while. She also felt the 4.2 aftershock and I didn't. I know the West Coasters probably think we're making a big deal out of nothing, but for us it is a big deal...in my 50+ years of living in Virginia I've never been in one, at least one that was strong enough that I knew about when it was happening! Had a SIL in RI call me shortly afterward. She was in a hospital visiting her father and felt it slightly there.

Karen, I'm glad to hear you made it thru ok. A friend's son said his apartment in Baltimore has structural damage - cracks between the ceiling and walls. Funny thing is I had been getting earthquake remarks about my plans to go to L.A. in Cali. Was on the road leaving Glenville, WV to head to the airport for my trip when the earthquake hit. No place is exempt from potential natural disaster. Now on my 2nd night out here in sunny Cali.
