Cpap uses a fixed pressure in inhale and exhale. Bipap changes the pressure between inhale and exhale. The inhale pressure is higher.

With bipap a person can have a greater difference between inhale and exhale pressures. Often advised when someone needs exceptionally high pressures to deal with events but could be used for other reasons.

Example... Your ResMed machine offers EPR which is exhale relief based on setting choice.. 1, 2 or 3 meaning a 1 cm, 2 cm or 3 cm reduction in the pressure while you exhale. With a BiPap the exhale relief can be greater than the max of 3 with the Elite or AutoSet. One could have Inhalation pressure of say 15 and exhale pressure of 8 cm to make it easier to exhale. There are some other factors involved but that is an overly simplified example.
