asthma and xPAP

Post by fiberfan » Mon Aug 08, 2011 11:05 am

Does anyone else with asthma notice either problems with breathing out against the pressure or with problems being worse when asthma is worse?

I don't have OSA but had enough RERAs in my diagnostic sleep study for my sleep doc to recommend trying cpap. I quickly figured out that on an S8 or S9 I needed EPR set at 3 so breathing out against the pressure didn't create as much tiredness as the autopap fixed.

Then early this year my asthma got worse so I switched to a bi-level machine. I used a rental refurbished machine without flow data for 3 months and am on my 2nd week with the S9 VPAP auto with asthma particularly bad for a variety of reasons.

Friday night I felt like there wasn't quite enough air but didn't bump the min epap up because I was almost asleep and try to avoid 'dial-winging'. Flow limitations have been worse the last 3 nights. While the VPAP Auto responds very efficiently to the flow limitations, I upped the min epap this morning and will see how the next few nights go.

I expect I will end up with 'good asthma' and 'bad asthma' settings and wondered if anyone else finds therapy needs change as asthma severity changes.

My asthma has been SO much better on CPAP. At first I had a hard time, and found using my fast acting inhaler before bed helped. But after a while I didn't need that anymore.

I also have asthma for many years and I also have a S9 VPAP Adapt. I was hoping to see a benefit to my asthma but so far I think its the same.I tried to reduce my medication but after a while I went back to the normal dose. I still havent given up hope though.I dont have any problem breathing at night.
