New Mask........

Post by Red Sox Rich » Wed May 18, 2011 4:36 pm

I am going to get another mask tomorrow. My Quattro has given me some problems and I am only in my 3rd week CPAPing. I have only had a perfect fit for 2 nights and since then I cannot get a good seal. I noticed my strap adjustment is way back towards my ears compared to the 2 night jackpot. Any thoughts on another full face mask??

It's not a FFM, but a total face mask. I have really good results with the Respironics FItLife Total Face Mask (not the one size fits all). I wear a large and the straps are a little big for me so I wear a kufi on the crown of my head which keeps the straps in the right place. Most nights I have 0.0 leaks.

I remember a post describing the Quattro when I first started with my cpap. The poster said:
"When it is good it is very, very good, and when it is bad it's bad." Boy was she right!

I've been using the Quattro for some time and even with all my experience I have good nights and bad nights with no rhyme or reason. I don't adjust the headgear at all, my sleeping conditions are unchanged. I just don't get it! The other night it leaked like a seive and even registered a "large leak" on my System One screen (which requires a huge leak to show up there!). Last night it sealed perfectly and I don't think it leaked a bit. I changed NOTHING from one night to the next.

I have learned to live with a certain degree of leaking in this mask. If it's a minor leak and it's not directly in my eye, I don't worry about it any more. I actually find my AHI's are better when there's a little leaking, I think because the machine compensates for the leak by raising the pressure (I have an auto) and does an even better job of controlling my AHI's (which are already pretty good with this machine). It probably means I need a little more pressure and to increase my minimum pressure a bit, too, but I'm happy with the current settings.

Thank you both for the help. I now know you do not need to waste time fussing for a small leak, just let it go and try to get some sleep! This has been challenging to me, even more than past surgeries and other issues. I am sticking to it !

If you are allowing little leaks as I do, be sure to keep an eye on your AHI and your "large leak"--if you see your AHI go up or the Large Leak register ANYTHING, then your leaks need to be under better control. Also if you are not feeling as well as you did without leaks.

In my opinion, the ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face mask is a much better mask than the Quattro.
It's been my mask of choice for six years.
Make sure you get the right size no matter which one you use. It sounds like the one you have is either a tad bit too big or you don't have it adjusted properly.

This is a work in progress. There are 2 other people w/cpap at my work and they both are comfortable with their setups but they told me it takes a while to "dial it in". I have me note ready for tomorrow and I thank you guys for the help !!
