Allergy season has hit hard. I've been reading a lot of posts talking about humidifiers... and I'm wondering. Does a higher humidifier level increase congestion? Or does it protect your nose? Allergies are knocking me out, had to go without the CPAP for half the night last night because I was too congested. Feel like crap today.
What should a girl do amidst hay fever season?
Help!
Allergies and the Humidifier... is less more?
Re: Allergies and the Humidifier... is less more?
there's no hard and fast rule about humidifiers... you just have to play with the settings on it until you 1.) feel better and 2.) don't get rain out (water in your hose).
Some people like it higher... some like it lower... some want it turned off with water in it... and some don't use it at all

MeghanRF,
I take it this is your first allergy season with CPAP? (It's certainly my first full allergy season.) I'm finding that I need to be much more proactive in dealing with the allergy symptoms than I have had to be in the past.
Rather than taking an OTC antihistamine only when I was really congested, as in the past, I've found that this year, I really need to take an antihistamine pill (currently Allegra) every single day now.
And I've found doing sinus rinses (similar to a neti pot) a couple of hours before bedtime really help clear out my nose and make it much easier to get to sleep.
So what *are* you currently doing for your allergies in addition to fiddling with the humidifier?

Re: Allergies and the Humidifier... is less more?
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
This is indeed my first allergy season with the CPAP. Just started using it in late January of this year. It does seem the major lesson here is that I have to be fully on to off the symptoms because I just can't wear the mask when I am fully stuffed.
I've been taking care of things by treating the symptoms, and not getting on a daily regiment to tackle the allergies. I bought allegra today, so i think it is indeed time to get on it. It sounds like from what everyone is saying that there is no better way for allergies with the humidifier, it's just what it feels like to you.
I turned the humidifier down the past few nights, and I think it's helped. I'm wondering if maybe the humidity was exacerbating the congestion... who knows! But, things are getting better with the drugs.
Thanks everyone! I wish you all clear breathing...
