Do you know ....

of anyone who became significantly better or even "cured" of apnea? I am not asking for medical opinions, just personal knowledge of anyone who has shown much improvement.

My brother had surgery on his soft pallete and uvula and no longer needs to use his CPAP machine to sleep. He claims he feels like a new man. I don't think one account is statistically significant, but there you have it.

Well, that is wonderful news. I had only heard of surgery with no good results. It is great news for your brother. I am really happy for him and the resolution of his apnea.

Procrastinator, how long has it been since your brother had the surgery. From what we are seeing on the forum and most statistics, the surgery usually lasts for a year or so if successful at all, and then the person is back on CPAP.

My brother had surgery, just over two years ago. My father had surgery as well, it helped a bit, but he needs his CPAP. Like I said, one account isn't statistically significant. I spoke to a surgeon last week and he advised against surgery in my case because of the type of apnea I have. He also mentioned that surgery in the vast majority of cases is not a permanent solution and follow-up procedures are ofter needed. In many cases, surgery only provides a modest improvement and machines are often needed anyway. However, he mentioned some interesting procedures that have been applied in the last six month, so there is hope yet, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Unless of course, my machine stops working.
