tHIS IS MY FIRST NIGHT WITH CPAP!!!

Post by CantsleepinTx » Fri Mar 25, 2011 10:34 pm

Hi....I am a new member but have been reading for a few weeks. In about an hour I will be trying to sleep with a cpap since my torturous sleep study. It seems I have had OSA for years but only recently has my body been showing effects from it. I am going into this very determined to comply. Since I am a mouthbreeder I needed a full mask and chose the new Quattro FX. Wish me luck !!

Hope your first night is successful, but if not, you know you can come back here with your questions and get the best advice available!! Please take some time to go to the User Control Panel and then Profile---> Edit Equipment and choose your stuff from the drop down menus. Please choose to show this in TEXT not pictures.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Thanks!!! My first night didn't turn out so well. I sort of expected that to happen. I woke up several times and couldn't stand it ...it was very weird. I tried several times during the night to try it again. I am determined !!! I know I am a mouth breather but I don't start that way when I lay down to sleep. I am wondering if a nasal mask with chin strap might be better. All in good time I guess and with trial and error I should find something that will work.

It might take some time to get adjusted and be able to sleep with the mask on your face but with patience and a bit tweaking you will get there .
Nasal mask and chin strap might be ok for you but as you have just got your new mask might as well find a way to make work as it need a bit of fiddling to find your sweet spot and later on when you are able to breathe through your nose you can try different mask .

Congratulations on getting past that first milestone. It will get easier but masks and leaks are the bane of this whole thing.
While some people put the mask on and hit the road at full speed, many do have to go through some adjustment stages wearing all this stuff. I was so bummed my first night. Lots of wakeups with body saying "what the heck is this stuff on my face". In time the body does adjust so it is not so foreign. Now I don't even know it is there.

Check your PM if you haven't already.

Hey man. Congrats on surviving the first night--it definitely does get easier and you have a great attitude. I had a tough time my first night too--I was just hyper aware of the mask and fiddled with it constantly through the night. Finding the right mask, getting it adjusted properly, etc., is the hardest part. I'm at the end of my first month of CPAP and am on my third mask. Fortunately, there are LOTS of options out there and one of them will work for you. There is also a wealth of information on this site and lots of people with very helpful advice, which is a great resource for those of us who are starting out and feeling overwhelmed by this new experience.

Keep up the good work and try not to get frustrated. You will make it work and it will be worthwhile!

Also - and this is coming from another newbie - the mask can make a lot of difference. My nasal mask was very uncomfortable, while the hybrid feels much better. Others in the forum have had the exact opposite experience, so it's very much a personal preference. If you find you really cannot tolerate that particular mask, you can try others, and it might help.
