Auto cpap and auto Bipap

Post by daniell77 » Fri Mar 25, 2011 5:51 pm

Two questions. I know the difference between Bipap and Cpap However, do all auto bipaps adjust pressure immediately at the moment when the user is having an apnea? I know at least some do. However, I did not know whether that is limited to certain Auto Bipap models. Second question: I use a auto Cpap. I heard that auto Cpaps take awhile or few minutes to change pressure when an apnea occurs? Or do they also change immediately upon an apnea occuring. If some do and some don't, which ones do and which auto cpap models don't? thank you.

Second question: They respond within seconds, not minutes. However, they respond with a small bump in pressure (determined by the manufacturers algorithm). If that's insufficient, they bump up again. Depending on how far the starting pressure is from the needed pressure, it may take several bumps. That takes time. But even if you are running wide open, I can't imagine it taking "minutes" to get there.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

No. For one thing, the "Auto" machines don't know what pressure they'll need until they get there. And, it's not necessarily the apneas they respond to......it's the preceding events (flow limitations and snoring) that will trigger a pressure increase. If the machine is sitting at a pressure of 6 and it takes a pressure of 12 to clear an apnea event, it'll either take a long time to get there or the event will be over with before it gets there........presuming that there are the preceding events that will cause the machine to increase pressures.

It has been discussed many times on the forum that there are no machines that will attempt to raise pressures when an apnea is in progress. And don't just take my word for it. This post is by a person who is very knowledgeable about how these things work. After you read this post, read the whole thread from the beginning.
